Salvation Army Leadership Analysis

The Salvation Army is a multi-faceted worldwide religious and charitable organization that operates numerous community centers across the United States and has been an established agency in downtown Lakeland, Florida since 1921. The Salvation Army has a strong organizational culture and the organization’s core values are intensely held and widely shared. This creates greater commitment, conveys a sense of identity, and enhances stability among members and the organization. How has different leadership styles and theories positively and negatively affected Lakeland’s Salvation Army, in their quest to build the largest community devoted to homeless families in Florida?

Bass and Steidlmeier (1999) noted that leaders engage in combination of leadership behaviors instead of just one specific style of behaviors (as cited in Schuh, Zhang, & Tian, 2012 p. 630). Colbert had to pay attention, listen, and inspire followers within the organization and the community to have confidence in his leadership to guide the organization forward and solve the problem. He realized that the “transients, along with drug dealers, prostitutes, and other street denizens made the downtown facility unsuitable for single parents to raise children”(Pera, 2012). Colbert had a vision of a radical move involving a massive project that could take up to eight to ten years to complete, which mentors homeless families toward an independent future. Colbert proposed a 27.5 million dollar project named the George W. Jenkins Community of Hope, which will be the largest community devoted to homeless families in Florida (Pera, 2012). He developed bonds with his followers through his ethical and moral behaviors, set challenging standards, displayed powerful leadership traits, and was confident, gaining mutual support from the community and dedicated staff. Colbert created a cohesive work environment by developing faith and trustworthiness in his leadership, which fostered action-oriented teamwork where members shared his passion and work ethics, meeting the challenge.
