McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of treason without proper evidence . During what is known as “The Salem Witch Trials”, people in the town of Salem, Massachusetts were accusing others of witchcraft and wizardry, even their friends. They did this for many reasons, envy, rivalry or just to save themselves from being accused. This, of course, still happens nowadays in our society. If you see someone you don't like do something you may take as suspicious, you’re going to tell on them. Many people lost their lives and others lost their good reputation. Reputation seems to have been an occurring theme in the play. People wanted to keep their reputation clean. “Excellency, I have signed seventy-two death warrants; I am a minister of the Lord, and I dare not take a life without there be a proof so immaculate no slightest qualm of conscience may doubt it.” Hale didn't want to believe the the girls were faking it because he already signed multiple papers sentencing innocent people to death.
