Student Resource Officers Improve School Safety

One of society’s most prized possessions is our youth because they are the future. The safety of our students means a lot, and school safety at the forefront of that discussion. There have been many security policies put in place to try and improve school safety, one of those being Student Resource Officers. A Student Resource officer is a “sworn officer assigned to a school on a long-term basis trained to perform three major roles: law enforcement officer, law-related counselor and law-related educator” ("The Role of an SOR."). Even though the role of the officer is designed to benefit the student’s safety, some feel that the amount of power that the officer possesses could be destructive. The officer’s power comes from their uniform, …show more content…
This is stated in The Gun-Free Schools Act that passed by the US Department of Education. The act prevents anyone from carrying a weapon to school, and says that he or she will face expulsion if they do (U.S. Department of Education). The measure helps prevent gun violence in school, but also prevents others from defending themselves if a person were to violate this rule and a school shooting were to occur. However, Student Resource Officers are police officers; therefore, they are allowed to carry a weapon. By employing these police officers in our schools, school administrations will be able to make sure there is someone on sight to defend the students if …show more content…
In the Sandy Hook shooting, a mentally unstable man named Adam Lanza shot his way through the the security system at the front door of Sandy Hook Elementary school. He proceeded to kill six teachers and twenty children. All of the children killed were between the ages of six and seven. Adam Lanza was mentally unstable and had it in him to kill six and seven year old innocent kids (“Connecticut Shootings Fast Facts”). These children were in Kindergarten and first grade, just beginning to learn how to read and write. They had the entire world ahead of them, but one person took that away from them and their families. Can you imagine being one of those parents when they first heard the tragic news that their six year old son or daughter had been shot and killed. After December 14th, those parents would never see their kids again. Would the outcome have been different if there was an armed police officer in the building during the time of the shooting? Sandy Hook had a security system at the front of their building; however, it did not stop the shooter. Having someone inside who is allowed and trained to carry a weapon could have saved those little children’s

The fifth article, outlines the internal school structure and how the school-to-prison pipeline is created. In the article; Building, Staffing, and Insulting: An Architecture of Criminological Complicity in the School-to-Prison Pipeline the authors Schept, Wall and Brisman focused their attention on how the school-to-prison pipeline is linked between education, police power, and incarceration. Simultaneously asserting that America has been a world leader in many areas, he argues that it has nonetheless failed miserably in protecting its own people from this type of violence due to the gun lobby’s manipulation of the American political system. Murphy proposes that mass slaughters, such as this, are a nearly uniquely American experience and that a change in gun regulation is the sole and long overdue answer to preventing more of the same. Murphy was a state congressman in Connecticut at the time that Adam Lanza shot and killed twenty-six people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. As such, his experience during that atrocity, together with statistical evidence…

Twenty-six people (20 students between the ages of 6 and 7 years old and six adults) were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School by 20-year-old Adam Lanza in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14 2012. At some point before Adam went to Sandy Hook Elementary School, investigators believed that he killed his mother, Nancy Lanza. Before living the house Adam stole three guns (A semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle, Pistols and a Sig Sauer) and then proceeded into the elementary school, according to law enforcement officials he was wearing black fatigues and a military vest. Earlier that year the principal of the school, Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, had ordered a new security system that would require visitors to be visibly identified and buzzed…

The article points to the significant statistical support that SROs presence in schools make students lose respect for police and are far less likely to be “scared straight” (Price, 2009). Research also contradicts that police-student relations are bettered with the presence of SROs, findings showing that students think many of the security measures are unnecessary and express feeling powerless as result of the manner schools now hand down punishments (Bracy, 2011). Furthermore, Mystrol (2011) stated that very few…

Introduction In today's society, 65 percent of public schools recorded that one or more violent incidents involving students had taken place, amounting to an estimated 757,000 incidents (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2017). In order to reduce crime, more police officers are being placed in schools. These school specific officers are called school resource officers, or SROs, who are employed by local police departments, sheriff's agency, or school systems where they typically work closely with school administrators to attempt to create a safer environment (US Department of Justice, 2016). Their main tasks are to be an educator on crime prevention, informal counselor, and law enforcer (Thomas, B., Towvim, L., Rosiak, J., & Anderson,…

If a student’s intent on hurting people they would know who would have a gun and how to get it. Also school officials are not the police, they have not been trained for these types of situations and can do more harm than good. The police can respond calmly than someone who is not used to being in these situations. Teachers should not be leaping in and start shooting away trying to fight the attacker, they should be trying to get the students away safely. More guns being fired is not the solution in a mass shooting and would likely bring more casualties and be harmful than intended originally.…

All schools should have these police officers because the school security has increased significantly because they have not been attacked.…
