Why Is Workplace Safety Important?

When someone dials 911, they expect someone to be there to help them. Whether they just had a slight fall, or are suffering from Cardiac Arrest, first responders need to be there for the citizens they serve. If a first responder is injured and cannot do their job properly, then they are putting the safety of the citizens at risk. The job of a first responder is to be there for the citizens, which is why workplace safety is always important to keep in mind. In the Fire and Emergency Services occupations, there are three common injuries; Sprains and strains, Smoke inhalation and broken bones. Of these injuries, sprains and strains are the most common and the easiest to obtain. Sprains and strains generally effect 2 major areas; the spinal column and the joints of the body. Within the spinal column the general effected area are the intervertebral discs that bulge out when strained. The other effected areas are the joints. Within the joints the muscle fibers are torn and stretched, which cause pain when moving the joint, which is why immobilization helps heal …show more content…
Rehab lasts for 3-4 weeks and is often 2 or 3 times a week. The exercises at Rehab are not strenuous, but that is what they are meant to be. The exercises taught at Rehab are muscle repetitive exercises that can be taken home and continued after Rehab is complete. Some of the exercises completed at Rehab are pelvic tilts forward and back, holding each time to strengthen lumbar vertebrae, maintaining proper posture while sitting on a yoga ball and holding weights above your head, this strengthens all muscles of the back, and lastly is electro stimulus with alternating heat and ice. Electro stimulus works as a muscle re-education treatment. It shocks the motor neurons of a muscle and gets rid of muscle memory.
