Personal Narrative: My Personal Experience In My Life

How can we explain the phenomenon responsible for shaping what we’ve become? Is it environmental factors, personal upbringing, culture and traditional influences or a set of cultured beliefs? According to Macionis (2015), “Sociology teaches us that the social world guides our life choices in much the same way that the seasons influence our choice of clothing”. Therefore, society determines the kind of person we eventually turn out to be. Reflecting on my own personal experiences, I realize that the time spent on institutions have been the most formative experience in my life. I write this personal narrative from my days in pre-school, leading up to my military career where I have been exposed to a wide-array of sociological concepts and philosophies …show more content…
Therefore, students enrolled in this institution come from families of a greater caliber in social structure; these are the children of politicians, doctors, attorneys and premium entrepreneurs. My family was considered wealthy and able to afford this prestigious learning environment due to our flourishing family business. Unfortunately, this livelihood had to come to an end when my parents severed their ties with my parental grandfather – the head of the company which resulted in our downward shift in social mobility. He exhibited predisposed personality factors of deviance as a result of unsuccessful socialization (Macionis, 2015). He had complications interacting with his parents and exhibited delinquent behaviors while obsessing with his desire for freedom. I was nearly drawn to this deviant subculture along with my yearning to prove my existence in society; but came to the realization with the help of the parents nurturing that this violated my values and my desire to achieve a higher social standing based on moral principles.
