SS Sultana was a river paddlesteamer. During the end of Civil War in America many prisoners of war, held by Confederacy in prison camps were getting paroled and needed to be transferred back to North. Lt. Col. Reuben Hatch contracted SS Sultana in exchange for a kickback and guaranteed 1400 prisoners. However, due to a mix up at the prison camp 2100 prisoners boarded the ship. In addition, SS Sultana was already carrying around 100 cabin passengers but had the legal capacity of 376 people leading to overcrowding on the ship. Anyhow, SS Sultana set sail and near Memphis, Tennessee 3 of its 4 boilers exploded due to too much pressure and low amount of water. As the ship caught fire, people jumped in the cold water and many died
