SLAM POERTY
From the moment I walked into the coffee shop, I knew the event was very popular. There were countless people sitting waiting anxiously for the performances to start. There were many people who were there to not only share, but to listen and that spoke volumes of the quality of performances I was about to indulge in. The show started with a sacrificial lamb who volunteered to go first, but they did not participate in the competition. The MC explained that someone had to break the tension because no one wanted to go first. After the “first” performance, people started presenting their original masterpieces. The competition structure was; in the first round, there were three winners. In the second round, the three winners competed and one performer was eliminated. In the third round, the two performers competed and there was a winner. The participants were graded by random judges who were chosen from the crowd. The maximum score a participant could earn

I think that the slam poetry gave the participants an outlet to express their identities that they have to suppress because people in their life deem them unacceptable. Even though there were song performances that were exceptional, what really drew me in were the secrets that were pouring out. This event made me tear up for individuals who feel the need to suppress part of their identity because they won’t fit into a box or because people around them don’t want them to express some parts of their identities. After the event, I realized that I could be doing a better job supporting all of my friends’ identities and I never want to be part of the system that makes anyone want to mask their true self. I am working on letting my friends know that they can be open with me and no matter what they identify as, I’m still a friend and will support them no matter

Recently, I had the pleasure of viewing a musical play on horseback. With over thirty-two horses and a cast of top trick riders made this an unforgettable experience. The play was a five-course dinner and a three-hour show all at the same time. This beautifully synchronized show Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction is performed at Dolly Parton’s Stadium in downtown Branson MO. At first glance, I was amazed by how clean and organized the whole building was.…

The film "The Atomic Cafe" depicts life in the atomic age using footage of the atomic bombs, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Cold War. With the buildup of nuclear arms, the biggest issue the American people were facing at the time was nuclear warfare. During the 50's and 60's, the government used safety guidelines like "duck and cover" to assure the American people that a casual, atomic attack was simply nothing to worry about. This film, with the use of satire, poked holes in the government's propaganda. With the recent events happening since Trump's presidency, "The Atomic Cafe" is a reminder of how the atomic age might make another appearance.…

Moving Theatre October 24, 2015 Joshua Chong It gets interesting when you take a play, put it outdoors and stretch it out over 3 kilometres. Even more so when each scene is written by different playwrights. Some may call it original, others may call that weird. At eight in the evening on Friday, November 4th, a band called The Neighbourhood performed at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas. Opening for them were the bands Manchester Orchestra and Chappo. Being a major longtime fan of both The Neighbourhood and Manchester Orchestra, I felt incredibly lucky to have family living near Dallas who were willing to provide a place to stay for myself and my husband to attend the concert and see a new city. The entire performance was impressive, extremely hyped, and emotional, all the way from the audience all the way to up on stage. While I knew of the first two bands mentioned, I knew nothing of Chappo and it was cool to hear something new live and in person.…

With cellophane wrapped untidily around my head and garbed in the utmost ill fitted white spandex clothing, I performed in my first musical. Being on stage somehow translates into being unapologetic and living purely through instinct for me. So, in moments of my delivery of the choreography flawlessly, putting all the other lollipops to shame, a star was born. From a young age, my brown hair and urge to wear plaid button-up shirts with sweatpants made me different from the crowd; I always seemed to find myself alone on the playground. I was the boy no one really wanted to talk to unless it was to get some gum.…

The New Jersey Chamber Singers and the Bridgewater-Raritan High School Symphonic Choir performed a choral concert, Psalms from Age to Age, located at The Presbyterian Church of Toms River. This performance by both of these choirs was impressive, as well as organized due to the talent and easy flow between each song. This performance was in a beautiful church with stained glass windows; the windows provided a sense of colorful light inside of the church, which I loved. The inside of the church was a great temperature and the seating was comfortable. The church is old; therefore, the seating is also old, but there were cushions on the pews, making it relaxing.…

The lessons the workshop taught the children that went through it was invaluable. We hope that we as adults show our children learn from us the mistakes of the past and treat people equally. A lot of times unfortunately people have stigmata’s either put on them by society because of how they look or they put them on themselves and people treat them differently. The lessons that this workshop teaches are lessons that everyone should have. You can spend our entire life trying to instill the values in your children that this class does in two days, and I want my children to be kind to people as we all do; I do not want them to ALIENATE someone because they are not the same as them, different ETHNITICIY or part of a MINORITY GROUP.…

On Sunday, November 27, 2016, at 6pm I did my concert report at a mom and pops restaurant called, Mariscos Uruapan in Mira Loma. Before entering, I looked at my surroundings; I have never seen people riding horses around the city. One of the observations that stood out to me was that many customers were not parking their own cars instead they used valet parking. People that rode their horses had certain areas to “park” their horse. I can hear the live band performing from the outside of the venue.…

Starbucks In today’s world, it seems like there is a Starbucks popping up on corners as fast as some of the weeds that use to grow in the same space. I can honestly say, I have never had a Starbucks drink because they are rumored to be expensive and the menu is overwhelming. In his ethnography on blues clubs in Chicago, David Grazian argues that authenticity is a social construct, based on an ideal reality of fixed subjectivities, formed by various factors. Further, the ways in which cultural consumers and producers assess authenticity is fluid in nature; it is never static and despite how much it shapeshifts over time, it remains as an absolute truth for those that create it. In Blue Chicago: The Search for Authenticity, Grazian details the primary variables that help to shape notions of authenticity. Foremost, he connects authenticity to space and physiological perception when he states, “First, it can refer to the ability of a place or event to conform to an idealized representation of reality: that is, to a set of expectations regarding how such a thing out to look, sound and feel (Grazian, pg. 10).”…

Opening night, the dancers that performed in the University Dance Theatre production, had talent, agility, and graceful movements. The concert had a variety of dance genres, visual appeal, and emotions that each piece and the show overall represented. Humor, drama, and serenity were not emotions I thought I would receive while watching these dances. One thing I did not realize would make many of the pieces was how crucial and reliant lighting and graphics were necessary to make the piece more visually interesting. However, I was excepting similar dances and movements; even if, some pieces had comparable choreography and emotional appeal the diversity stood out.…

Many of what I had already known was that while our society is slowly becoming more accepting there are still many instances that need to be worked upon in order to be fully inclusive as we become more diverse in the LGBT community. The way I learned about the LGBT community was from my friends who were part of the community, learning about it in psychology classes, or by learning it from the media. I developed what I had been learning through learning more about it and how I could take more steps to help with society becoming more inclusive. From the event, I took away that we don’t really have to do much to be a diverse society, and that we can be diverse and not inclusive, which happens in regards to many things including the LGBT community. Also in the event, I learned more statistics about LGBT students.…

On November 19th I went to New Dorp high school as I do every year to watch Sing. Sing is a performance the school puts on each year. The students are divided into two teams: SeniorSoph, which consist of all the seniors and sophomores that want to be involved, and JuniorFresh, which are all the juniors and freshman involved. Both teams have to come up with an original play that the director writes him or herself and they then compete to see who will win that year. The shows are judged off multiple categories.…
