The Rye: A Career As A Nurse

My former next door neighbor, Dr. Bridget Holden, who I also had the opportunity to shadow, is a mother of three, a wife to a lawyer, an active member of her church, a regular tennis player and also a surgeon. I had wanted to become a doctor since I was young but as I reached high school, people were telling me more and more about the difficulties of the lifestyle that most physicians, especially for women and especially in regards to having a family. I was told I should be a nurse or a PA instead but I was still sure about wanting to be a physician. In conversations I had with Dr. Holden when I regularly babysat her kids, at block parties and other neighborhood events, and also when I shadowed her, I saw how she was able to balance all of the things she wanted to get out of life while also working as a surgeon. …show more content…
She provides her patients with excellent, compassionate care. In shadowing her, I saw the respect and value she gave to each of her patients as well as how well they all responded to her and appreciated her care. She also is an excellent mother and wife and travels abroad annually with her church to provide surgical care to people in medically underserved areas. My conversations with her put to rest the fears that I had about the practicality of a career in medicine for a woman who also wants to have a family and have a "work-life balance."
