After reading The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen, I think that it would be a wonderful addition to the books available for literature circles and a great candidate for the competition. Along with having a great plot line with meaningful morals for the reader, The Running Dream is a awesome book for note taking; including many vocabulary words, figurative language and persuasive language on hand.
The Running Dream presents a well thought out message to the reader through the view of Jessica, the main character. Throughout Mark Twain’s chapter “ Dreams Dissipated,” Twain refers to a loaded topic, “the great earthquake” in San Francisco, where he uses connotative diction to discuss the elite’s reaction to the earthquake. By using connotative diction associated with immoral behavior, Twain mocks society’s behavior on idolizing the wealthy and holding the elite in high moral standards. Twain uses diction often associated with grotesque behavior or unflattering qualities such as, “fat”, “raid on their husbands’ purses”, “growled”, and “sprawling” to illustrate the wealthy’s animal-like behavior during San Francisco’s “great” earthquake. By utilizing the words “growled” and “sprawling” he portrays the elite as behaving like animals, he does this to show…

In the novel Esperanza Rising the author Pam Munoz Ryan uses the image of a blanket throughout the story. In Chapter 9, the author uses a simile to compare a dust storm to a thick suede blanket. A suede blanket would be thick, velvety, smooth, and a matte tan color. The author uses figurative language to convey her ideas because most people will not experience a dust storm so it is difficult to imagine. This comparison is good because even other the two things are very different this simile helps give the reader a frame of reference so that we can visualize a cloud of thick dust settling everywhere.…

Hunter saves some of her most memorable run-ons for the end of Dishes. In this example we have the nouns, adjectives, and verbs one after the other. They are even more clustered together because the writer chooses to get rid of punctuation in some instances. Page 29 reads, I ask the cashier to wait while I run to the dairy aisle, I am craving cottage cheese now, I get the biggest tub there is, large curd, I laugh to myself, I laugh and laugh, big girls gotta eat.” It is apparent to me what Hunter is trying to do with this run-on.…

There are multiple definitions to having an “awakening.” In Webster’s dictionary the definition states, “coming into existence or awareness.” In a metaphorical sense, an awakening could be whatever the person makes it. A wise man once said, “motion equals emotion.” All words and phrases, regardless of whether they are spoken or written, are characterized by their motion: their meter, their rhythm. The motion created by words has the ability to bring individuals to an emotional place. In Langston Hughes’ “Dream Variations,” motion is at the core of one’s understanding of the poem itself. The authors of most, if not all, pieces of writing include examples of figurative language. The reader of Einstein’s Dreams, by Alan Lightman, is able to easily identify several uses of figurative language. Lightman describes several different worlds in his novel. When we read something we usually take it as it is but that is exactly what figurative language is not. When we read certain expressions or words with a different meaning it is known as figurative language which is different from literal interpretation. Figurative language goes beyond the meanings of the words that we read which give us, the readers a greater insight into the piece. There are many types of figurative language such as symbolism, metaphors and similes which are all seen in Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering…
