What would you do if you were sent to be an apprentice to someone who frightened you, and had to something you know nothing about for the rest of your life. Will is living that, and he doesn't even know who his parents are, or who he is. He has been chosen to be a ranger apprentice for an unsmiling master named Halt. Will has to find who he is, prove himself worthy to be a ranger, and discover the mysteries of Halt and the Ranger code. Follow Will on this life changing adventure to find the truth. The Ruins of Gorlan written by John Flanagan uses modern taste and historical fiction to create a death defying story that young readers will enjoy from beginning to end. But that didn’t make it any less terrifying or blood-chilling when the words were said.“We’re going after the Kalkara.”(Flanagan 250). The Kalkara are monsters that have killed many when commanded by Morgarath, an evil warlord with a craving for blood. Will has only been a Ranger’s apprentice for slightly more than a year and he is now faced with a deathly challenge. This depth filled novel has humorous moments that give the story a playful feeling when incorporated “Suddenly, Tug arched his muscular little back and shot straight into the air, all four feet leaving the ground at the same time. He twisted violently to one side, came down on his front legs and kicked his rear legs high into the sky.
