After Jimmie confronted Pete, Maggie has not returned home for days and her mother is in horrible condition. Maggie’s mother is always drunk and feels that Maggie betrayed her family and that she would never accept Maggie back when she comes home and asks for forgiveness. Mary believes she did all that she could do as a mother to keep Maggie safe and uses Maggie leaving an excuse every time she is in trouble.

Maggie and Pete go to a dance hall where they are seated next to a women called Nell, who is a prostitute there with Freddie. Pete and Nell have a long conversation and Maggie is jealous by the way Pete looks so happy when talking to Nell. Eventually Pete leaves with Nell and this leads to Freddie saying that is why he does not disclose his name to “those type of people”.

Jimmie also does not help Maggie by ignoring Maggie’s plea for forgiveness for her actions. Many of the neighbors watch as this is going on and make sure their children and babies stay away from the “ruined” girl Maggie has become.Jimmie is outraged that Pete has “ruined” his sister and is determined to fight him no matter the harsh consequences may be. Jimmie is angered at Pete, even though Jimmie has done this to many girls before, because he thought Pete was his best friend and would never hurt his sister.

Jimmie and an accomplice go into the bar that Pete works at and begin acting inappropriately and request alcohol. They are acting very rowdy so Pete asks them to finish their drinks, leave and not cause any trouble. Jimmie tells Pete to make him to leave and this starts a fight between Jimmie and Pete. Jimmie and his accomplice begin beating up Pete severely and run away when they hear the police are coming. Instead of helping Pete get away from the police Jimmie decides to leave and leave his old friend
