The main character’s view to show maturity and growth, but also to make you think. In Night of the Living Dead. You see zombies as mindless beasts to only be slaughtered or overwhelmed by eventually. Not as people who had lived and a job and family. They had a chance to impact the world, but are now cursed to walk or shuffle for eternity. In Rot and Ruin that view is challenged by two events. Once where you see three bounty hunters on the opening of a canyon playing a game of name a martial art move, perform said move and the other two rate it and either kill the zombie or perform another move. This is a teaching moment for tom, as Benny is confused at first and showing how the rot and ruin is stripped of rules and for many humanity. In the story, Benny only remembers one thing about the first night, him being handed to Tom from his mom who wore a white dress with red sleeves and that he was a coward for running away from his mother and how he should’ve fought and saved his Mom. The main conflict of the book is where Benny’s only crush named Nix, and her mother, Jessie Riley is murdered and she is kidnapped. The kidnapper is a man nicknamed Charlie Pink-Eye, once a figure of manliness and courage, benny learns the truth about him. That he’s only a big bully who is just afraid of people.
The ending of this book is special because as a reader, you can figure out that Benny’s mom had been bitten and had probably begged for Tom to run. Benny also learns this. And of a story of how Charlie had picked up on a gated community called sunset hollow and how he and a group of men were mass-killing the zombies inside. But one man stopped them, he killed the whole group except one. A man named Charlie, had begged for his life and was on his knees in front of
