The Roseta Research Paper

The Roseta was a space probe built o study the comet 67P/Churyumov- Gerasimenko with a module for orbitng and landing caled Philae. This robot was

launched by the European Space Agency and it launched Roseta in March of

204. It ok the rocket en years to reach the comet after being launched from

French Guiana on march 2, 204. but it also became the first o circle or orbit a

comet. This was a signifcant achievement because up until then, other ockets

had only ben able to fly by or close to the comets. In this case, the mision was

acomplished when Roseta was the first o reach, orbit and perform a controled

landing land on the comet nucleus. The comet, 67P/ Churyumov-Gerasimenko

was named after its rusian discoverers, astronomers Ivanovych

European Space Agency, or ESA, owner and operator of over 200 space misions

launched the spaceship which was made up of two very important parts: Roseta,

the space orbiter and probe and the Philae "the robotic lander". Each in itself was

made up of diferent instruments. The Roseta consisted of twelve instruments

and the Philae of nine. The Roseta wil orbit 67P for 17 months and the mision

is to complete a detailed study of the comet, something that has not ben tried

before. The ESA wil control the spacecraft from its Germany center ESOC

(European Space Operations Centre) in Darmstad, Germany. However, scientifc

data, filng and interpretation of the information wil take place in the European

Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) near Madrid, Spain.

Since its landing, the Philae, whose objective was to transmit data from the

surface of the comet, has transfered data about he molecular and mineralogical

compositon as wel as surface images. These are the first images ever obtained of

a comet's surface.

In the world of robotic space probes there are "impactors" and

Hence, many of the pictures

of comet flybys, like Mars, were never taken because the cameras on the Roseta

were of and some computers were ofline.

The scientifc goals of the mision, aside from landing on the surface of a comet,

which is impresive in itself since it had never ben done before, was to gather as

much information (data) as posible on the elements and minerological,

molecular and isotopic compositon of the material on the comet. Just as

important was the retrieval of physical properties and characterizations of the

comet's surface and its subsurface. Not o mention the structure and magnetic

and plasma environment of the nucleus.

Upon inspection of the magnetic field it was discovered that he comet oscilates

at such a sped (40-50miliherts) that when scientists manipulated the sped, it

was posible to hear a signal which sounded like a song. Unusual, as far as Iknow,

for sound to be present in space. Knowledge that we have learned from this

mision? Just last wek, on November 18th, large bodies of water and ice were

discovered by Philae. As a mater of act, after driling dep into the surface of

He and his wife, Carolyn Shoemaker, began searching for asteroids and comets using the Schmidt telescope located at the Palomar Observatory in California. Together they found 32 comets and over 800 asteroids (Hughes, 2001). Working with a colleague named David Levy they found their most important discovery in the sky, a comet later named “Shoemaker-Levy 9.” This comet had been gravitationally shifted by the planet Jupiter and was set to impact the gas giant on the 16th of July, 1994 (Kerr, 1994). This would be the first time an impact would be seen in real time and many scientists believed there wouldn’t be much of a show.…

Its purpose was to detect cosmic rays while in orbit; unfortunately the satellite failed to ignite on its fourth stage in its launch process and never made it to orbit. During the time of Explorer 2, the Soviets were also at work with Luna 2, this probe became the first to hit the moon but after 33.5 hours into flight the signals were dead. The US then created another satellite, the fourth satellite by America, and the first satellite to be solar-powered. They created the Vanguard 1, the first part of the Vanguard Project. Although communication with the satellite was lost in 1964, it remains the oldest artificial satellite still orbiting the Earth and the oldest piece of debris orbiting Earth.…

The Apollo 11 mission is credited for not only landing a man on the moon, but also for collecting the first samples from another planetary body (SNASM). Through the research, many theories were proven to either be true or false. Prior to the moon landing, scientists had many questions concerning the moon’s surface and even the possibility of life on the moon. Before the moon landing , the idea of life on the moon was widely accepted. Apollo 11, however proved that idea wrong.…

Have you ever realized that some comets are in different places of the sky sometimes? Well that's because comets appear in two different places of the Solar System. Those places are The Kuiper Belt and The Oort Cloud. A comet can spend billions of years in either The Kuiper Belt or The Oort Cloud. Once two comets collide, they starts heading into the Inner Solar System and that's when the tail starts to appear.…

The discovery of this comet made by Terry Lovejoy, marks the first time alcohol, that people on Earth drink has been found in a comet. In addition to pumping out alcohol, Lovejoy is sprinkling out a type of sugar. Nicolas Biver and his team in Paris have been studying this comet, and have found 21 organic molecules coming from the comet. According to NASA in a recent news release, “The finding adds to the evidence that comets could have been a source of the complex organic molecules for life on…
