Gwendolyn Brooks, a female black author. She had written many poems, but to everyone there is one that sticks out the most. “We Real Cool.” She wishes that wasn 't the only poem that she is well-known for but that will do for her. Her poem is very short yet it is good enough to set an image and makes someone think about what era this was at and how it can trigger something.…
Sound is a key component to my documentary and film. The sound for this documentary will be very typical to a normal suspenseful medical film. The sound will not only include speech, but it will also include music, words and effects to help enhance the film. In addition, the film will include multiple sound elements, however most importantly natural sounds. This will include the beeping of the heart rate monitor, creaking of the door opening, and loud sound of footsteps.…
Martin Luther King Jr. uses many rhetorical strategies in his letter to Birmingham. While reading the letter I noticed he enjoys to show his knowledge of historical features and names mentioned in the Bible. King starts off the letter (paragraph 2) with who he is and why he is in Birmingham. He then gives the comment that he is apart of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, showing he is a christian and later on finding out he is a minister.…
Martin Luther KingJr. , born on January 15,1929, in his grandparents ' home in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents were Martin (Michael) Luther King, Sr., a Baptist minister, and Alberta Williams Kim, a former teacher. Luther King 's father had originally named him Michael, after his father, but Martin Luther King 's father later changed both of his names to Martin Luther, in honor of the 16th-century German religious reformer.…
In Martin Luther King, Jr.'s “Letter to Birmingham Jail,” he uses imagery to further his point of the negative effects of segregation. For instance, King states that you can see, “...the tears welling up in her little eyes…” when he tells a story about how a colored girl couldn't go to an amusement park because it was only for white people. This use of imagery helps the readers see the little girl, recognize the injustice, and feel the girl's pain and curiosity. Similarly, Dr. King also says you can see the “...hate filled policemen curse, kick, brutalize, and even kill your black brothers and sisters with impunity.” Thus, the reader can visualize the physical abuse to negro people as a result of segregation.…
In “My Dungeon Shook: A Letter to My Nephew” and “A Letter from Birmingham Jail,” James Baldwin and Martin Luther King Jr. write about the racial tension of their time, respectively. It is essential to note that the nephew, James, is a mean through which Baldwin addresses African Americans. In a similar manner, King addresses white moderates by directing his letter towards a particular group of Birmingham clergymen. Both authors utilize allusion and tone to subtly encourage their respective audience to challenge the limiting societal and cultural practices of the time. King, however, offers a concrete approach; while Baldwin offer an abstract approach that African-American can take to face the limitation and discriminations.…
I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen- When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table-When company comes.…
Throughout history, people have been treated differently based on what they choose, or are forced, to do in life. Whether it’s a career they enjoy or not, civilians need jobs in order to ensure safety and prosperity for their family. Unfortunately, it has been repeatedly shown that society and governments often set rules that restrict certain workers from acquiring as much as they need or deserve for the work they do. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is one of the many fought for a cause such as this. He was a leader of the Civil Rights movement who argued for total equality between all races in the United States, with an ultimate goal of eliminating segregation.…
Oppressed people need to set themselves apart from the rest - they need to realize that being different does not make them any less of a human being, or less fortunate. When oppressed people come to terms with this, they will be able to reflect this to others and not settle for what “has always been”, but rather pride themselves in their distinction, and take steps towards making a difference. In “Just Walk On By: A Black Man Ponders”, Brent Staples shares a personal experience on how he had to conform, to everyone’s perception of a black man, instead of standing up for himself. He had to put on a façade to make others feel comfortable so as to avoid grave risks to himself and the community. Brent Staples was oblivious of the fact…
“Letter from a Birmingham Jail” is a letter from Martin Luther King Jr. and is based on human rights and equality, specially for black people. My favorite part of this letter was when he wrote “Perhaps it is easy for those who have never felt the stringing darts of segregation to say, “Wait.” After that, he gives a couple of examples of when it is hard to explain the segregation to other people, specially to little kids. This impacted me so much because when you think about it, it is really hard to try and explain innocent kids why they fill inferior to other people, or why they fill different or left out. Even though this problem was years ago, you can still see cases of racism in the streets.…
“We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves”, once said Barbara Jordan. Barbara Jordan was a leader in the civil rights movement and do to her experiences she has developed this opinion. During her time, African-Americans were fighting to have rights and be treated as people. Therefore, her opinion that everyone should be accepted has definitely been influenced by how she was treated and how throughout her life she had to fight for the right to be seen as a person, even if she was different than what the majority believed to be “normal”. Purposefully, within the first collection there were stories that were meant to show how accepting people are, and whether or not we, as a society, should be accepting…
Id number:000549183 Imagine having to fight against injustice in today’s world, how would you go about with your mission? Would you risk your life just so you can lead to help others just like Harriet tubman?, or would you refuse to give up something you deserve just like how Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on the bus. Maybe you might even have to go to jail to prove your point just like how Nelson Mandela spent 20 years in jail for his opposition to the racist apartheid system which excluded blacks from many areas of society. Back in the day mainly starting in the 1800’s, many people had to fight and stand up for injustice.…
A concrete patio or entryway is a standard on most homes in Texas. Owners don’t typically even acknowledge that they can transform this feature of their home although it’s typically the first thing a visitor sees. A concrete overlay is a cost efficient way to add style and a modern touch to the front of a home to boost its curb appeal. A concrete overlay is an ideal way to transform any concrete feature that needs a little style.…
Birth of a Nation A dream, a fight for rights, and the simple desire to make a change. Martin Luther King Jr. and Susan B Anthony both wanted to change the world, in two different centuries, for two different reasons, and yet they both were remarkably successful. They both also helped changed the world as we know it today through the power of words.…
The mixture design that is shown in table 1 is the basic components that will go into each group of concrete. The concrete design shown in table 1 has a designed 28 days compression strength of 40 MPa (5800 psi). With the intention to test the concrete in a shorter time span, the compression was design at 40 MPa at 28 days in order to get a compression strength of 30 MPa after 7 days. This mixture design was determine from using a couple design procedure and also contacting a representative from Sika AG. (Designing and proportioning normal concrete mixtures).…
