The Rosary is one of the most important parts of a Roman Catholic’s daily life. The Rosary is said to have been given to Saint Dominic by the Virgin Mary in 1214. Saint Dominic grew up in a well-off family in Castile, Spain as his father was the the lord of the manor in his village. His uncle was an archbishop and also an important figure in his life. He knew from an early age that he wanted be involved in the church. As a young man, Dominic studied theology and the arts in Palencia. In 1196, he joined the chapter in Osma. A few years later, he joined the Bishop of Osma to preach to the heretics in France. He continued to work in France until he founded the Dominican order. While he was in France, Virgin Mary came to him and gave the concept of the Rosary. Near this time, he encountered Francis of Assisi. This relationship can still be found between the Franciscans and the Dominicans in the church today.
