Essay On The Rooney Rule

The Rooney rule is a national football league policy that requires league teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs. It is sometimes cited as an example of affirmative action, though there is no quota or preference given to minorities in the hiring of candidates (Axson). The Rooney rule was created in 2003. The rule is a form of affirmative action stating that National Football Teams or franchises have to interview a minority for executive of head coaching positions. The question looms: how does the rule affect the sports industry? This paper will seek to discuss the significance of how the Rooney Rule is an ethical issue that has affected the sport industry in insensitive ways.
The recent team that has been in the media for violations of the Rooney rule is the Oakland Raiders. The Oakland Raiders hired Jon Gruden prior to interviewing other candidates for the head coaching position. The policy set out to strive as a tool to help minorities navigate to head coaching positions in the national football league is not being taken serious and teams like the Oakland raiders are getting away with violation of the policy. The commissioner Roger Goodell need to act upon this lack of diversity and failure to pursue affirmative action in the national football league because if one team think they can violate and not follow the rule soon many other franchise will do the same. The rule has affected the sports industry in an unethical way because the qualified minority applicants are not receiving and granted the positions they deserve for their hard work. The Oakland Raiders need to be granted a hefty fine for violation of the rule and the commissioner of the league needs to assure that actions like this does not occur
