In this poem, the readers get a look into the last moments of the speaker's life. The speaker states that before their death, the room was so unbearably silent that the only noise heard was the sound of a fly buzzing, “I heard a Fly buzz - when I died - / The Stillness in the Room / Was like the Stillness in the Air - / Between the Heaves of Storm - /.” The reader can then conclude that the speaker was in a room with loved ones who had cried until they couldn’t anymore, “The Eyes around - had wrung them dry - / And Breaths were gathering firm /.” The speaker then states that they wrote and signed a will that will give away pieces of themselves, objects they’ve collected/bought over the years of their life, “I willed my Keepsakes - Signed away

His previous “cold reprieve” has been warmed by the leaves in nature that “burn red” before dying. The short but graceful life of the leaf is a metaphor for what life should be - beautiful regardless of the time given. This juxtaposition of life as a “cold reprieve” changing into the image of a leaf burning “red” shows how the voice’s view on life is changing throughout the poem by the echo’s prompting. Realizing that nature is stunning in its death, he now understands that life is a wonderful journey leading up to death that should be cherished in all of its beauty.…

Both poets Paula Meehan and Seamus Heaney have captured the emotion of Loss, as well as the inevitability and sadness of death, through their own experiences and nature. However their poetic styles are vastly different from one another, even though they share certain similarities such as when writing elegy poems, or poetry about the death of their fathers, which can be witnessed in “The mushroom field” and “The Butts”. Many of Heaney’s poems are about his life which is wrapped up in the past and engages with the subject of death and loss in a rather personal and anecdotal way, in contrast to Meehan exploring loss and death in a partially detached way and occasionally through nature. As in “Had I not been awake” Heaney talks about his experience in first person narrative, in comparison to Meehan’s, Zealot as it was written in a detached 2nd person narrative, It was directed at the audience. I will analyze the poets different styles and compare and contrastt………..
