Many people have read about the harsh realities of the lives of African Americans during the Jim Crow era and how they've had to live in poverty, there's a painting that gives you a glimpse of how those African Americans lived. Through the abstract arrangement of the figures and objects, texture, and colors, The Room No. VI conveys Cortor's want to depict how African American people have had to carry out their lives in cramped and confined homes. In the painting, there is a woman surrounded by three other young women who can be presumed to be her daughters and/or sister lying on a makeshift bed of covers on the floor.
