Many people were irate with the fact that an African American raped a innocent white girl. This influenced some white men to get together and start a lynch mob. These men were looking to get Thomas out of jail and lynch him for his wrongdoing. Atticus was going to let anyone do harm to his client that he knew was innocent. In order to protect Thomas from the mob, Atticus sits in front of the jail cell for a night. Soon, a group of men show up to the jail and demand Atticus to move out of their way. Atticus refuses to listen as the men threaten. Scout and Jem appear at the scene, and Scout gets the men to leave by talking to one of their members, Mr. Cunningham. He tells them how Thomas Robinson was shot seventeen times while attempting to escape from prison. Atticus and Calpurnia then go to Thomas Robinson’s house and tells his family the news.
