Although the Enlightenment was a 17th century intellectual movement encouraging reasoning and the challenging of authority, the seeds of this philosophy date back as far as the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were the first and foremost who exemplified what happened when the pursuit of personal knowledge was elevated above the knowledge of God. Genesis 2:15-17 says “The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. But the Lord God warned him, ‘You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden, except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die’” (NIV).
