Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, began in a city named Illyria. It was a small city beside the sea. At the shore, a young woman named Viola was rescued after a disastrous shipwreck that nearly killed her and her brother. However, Viola assumes that her brother was killed, and she was never going to see him again. She talks to the captain of the crew that rescued her, and pleaded for advice on what to do to support herself. The captain explained that working for the Countess Olivia was no good considering that she recently lost her brother and claims that she will mourn her brother until seven years is past. Annoyed, Malvolio confronted them, and criticized them for their irresponsible and rude behaviour at the house, saying, “My masters, are you mad? Or what are you? Have you no wit, manners, nor honesty but to gabble like tinkers at this time of night? Do you make an alehouse of my lady’s house, that you squeak out your coziers' catches without any mitigation or remorse of voice? Is there no respect of place, persons, nor time in you?” However, Sir Toby Belch and Sir Andrew responded by making jokes about Malvolio. When Malvolio left, Maria, Sir Toby Belch and Sir Andrew brainstormed ideas to sabotage Malvolio, in return of his rude attitude towards them. Maria suggested that a fake letter made by her would be given to Malvolio in Olivia’s handwriting, stating that Olivia has fallen in love with him. Considering that Malvolio’s love is Olivia, he will do anything to make Olivia return her love towards him. With this understanding in mind, Maria wrote the letter with bizarre requests, instructing him to look down upon lower class people, treat Sir Toby rudely, and wear yellow criss-cross stockings while smiling.
