All the women from stories live in a patriarchal society. Samia from the story, “Another Evening at the Club,” started the story living in a poor family to being part of an arranged marriage to a rich man. In this marriage, the husband was in complete control; “he was the man, she the women, he the one who carried the responsibilities [and] made the decisions” (Rifaat, 1983, p. 261). Mrs. Mallard from “The Story of an Hour” was in an unhappy marriage that felt extremely one-sided; so much so that when she thought her husband died, she felt, “free!” (Chopin, 1894, p. 2). The women who were unsuccessful being, Samia, Aqsa, and Mrs.Mallard. Samia from “Another Evening at the Club” was unsuccessful because she allowed her husband to overpower her good will. She had the right intentions but did not stand up for herself like the other women who were successful. Aqsa from “Same Story, Different Ending” was unsuccessful because she did not take note of her situation and went ahead and wore western clothes. This got her “killed by her father and brother in a brutal act… of family honor” (Denette, 2010, p. 1). Mrs.Mallard from “The Story of an Hour” was unsuccessful because she allowed herself to feel trapped in her relationship.
