The Role Of Warning Signs In Serial Killers

Superior Essays
There are many serial killers within the U.S. but finding them is almost impossible. Even some people seem to believe that others can prevent serial killers by realizing “warning signs” in most people. However it really still will not help because most “ warning signs” are far-fetched and most people who are considered “normal” experienced these “warning signs” and they are not even known as serial killers, most are even actresses, actors, and even presidents. In my opinion, even though there are so-called warning signs it still does not show how some people experience the warning signs and turn out fine, plus the psychological side of serial killers that looks deeper into serial killers minds, and in any way, serial killers are still considered …show more content…
However, one man experienced these “warning signs” yet turned out to be very successful. This man was known as “strangely awkward, nondescript, little levity, but no degeneracy either” (Black). Who was this man? This man was, in fact, the 37th President of the United States, President Richard M. Nixon. He was known as an awkward and a germaphobe, an obsession with cleanliness, while he was just a child. He experienced these common traits and characteristics known as “warning signs” but still turned out to be one of America's presidents. He had grown up with an abusive father and an extremely controlling mother. During his presidency, he experienced an abusive power in which this led to his impeachment all because of the Watergate scandal, a major political scandal where five men broke into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee and revealed illegal activities involving the Nixon administration and even Nixon himself. Even though he was not very successful as a president he broke through the barriers, “warning signs”, that categorized people as possible serial killers. He lived a better life than most serial killers, he had been Governor Overall, this goes to show that even though a person has experienced the “warning signs” listed on the blog, “10 Most Common Traits of Potential Serial Killers”, does not mean that that person could turn out to be a serial

A lot of people want to blame the parents of the offenders, asking “what did you turn your child into?” 36% of serial killers were physically abused, 26% were sexually abused, and 50% were psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). Many people have logically come to the conclusion that just because someone is abused, it does not mean that they will become a serial killer; or even a murderer; which is true. In the general population (people who have never committed murder) only 6% are physically abused, 3% are sexually abused, and 2% are psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). The dramatic difference of abuse frequency between people who are serial killers and people who are not seems evident enough to support that serial killers are created.…

Serial murders are not a new phenomenon with one of the earliest known serial killings dating back to the 19th century. As serial killing became prominent law enforcement started to form various theories and profiles as to who these people are. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) established the process of profiling in the 1970s. According to the FBI, “profiling is a system designed to detect and classify the major personality and behavioral characteristics of an individual based upon analysis of the crime or crimes the person committed. Serial murder is a relatively rare event, estimated to comprise less than one percent of all murders committed in any given year” (Robert J. Morton, Supervisory Special Agent, FBI).…

Truth be told, despite all of the research, there is still no definite answer (Allely, Minnis and Thompson). Of course, something is mentally wrong with a person if they desire killing other human beings, but the decision to act on this desire is based solely on other influences that caused the person to make that choice. People are obviously more comfortable with blaming the act of serial killing on some mental defect of the brain because it is frightening to think to think we as a society play a part in a person becoming a serial killer.…
