The images of models in the media are altered, but women continue to compare themselves to these edited portraits of beauty. And although there are many different causes for women to have low self-esteem, there is one reason that seems to have a greater effect, and that is the use of photo shop in advertisements.
A study in the Journal of Consumer Research found that ads featuring beauty products actually lower female consumers’ self-esteem (Science Daily), but what the consumers aren’t realizing is, most models are dramatically photo shopped to look ‘beautiful’. The unrealistic body image in the media distorts the reality and leads people to believe they are abnormally heavy when they really aren’t. Ads for beauty products seem to make consumers
