The Role Of The Sunshine Readers

Decent Essays
My aunt is the leader and founder of the Sunshine Readers organization in Laguna Beach. The Sunshine Readers program provides PJ Storytime – an evening literacy program – for families at five OC Public Libraries branches. We dress in our pajamas and bring storybooks to life for young children addressing two vital community needs – early childhood literacy and youth development. During PJ Storytimes, children in the audience are completely captivated as we "perform" stories rather than just read them. As the Sunshine Readers bring characters to life, the audience is transported to an enchanted land or taken on an amazing adventure while interacting with the readers/performers. From volunteering here with my aunt from a young age I have developed

During family literacy night I was able to practice my DLTA lesson and my storytelling lesson. A variety of students asked to hear a story first and others asked to be read to. The book I read was Llama Llama and the Bully Goat, and the story I told was The Gingerbread Man with a different ending from the traditional story. Family Literacy Night was a great opportunity to practice my storytelling skills, and practice what questions allow them to think deeper. Although I enjoyed it there were moments that I thought about changing some questions and even changing my book.…

Book Buddies Book Buddies is a strategy I can see myself using one day in my professional practice. This strategy is a fun way to get students excited about reading. Struggling first graders, who cannot read well are paired with community volunteers to read together (Caldwell & Leslie, 2013, pg. 51). The student can listen as their buddy read to him/her, listening to the sound each letter makes to form words and the correct pronunciation of difficult vocabulary. While reading the volunteer and student can take turns and/or use choral and echo reading.…

Storybird is an E-book creation program with interesting graphics, allowing users to easily create story books. Maple Tree Home School believes that this is important to our young students shaping their perceptions of books and reading. Younger students will be highly motivated to create books and this in turn may assist students in their discovery of the beauty of reading. By creating E-books students will gain a better appreciation for the effort that goes into making books and therefore realize the privilege held to those who…

Under those circumstances, printed books could eventually join the ranks of clay tablets and scrolls displayed in collectors’ glass cases with other curious items of the distant past(Nuwer, 2016). Certainly, the astounding transfiguration from paper books to glass…
