Principals must ensure that they stay passionate for their work because “passion is contagious and sets the tone for the entire organization” (Berg, 2012, p. 8). A principal who celebrates the little classroom triumphs of the rookie teacher or offers support or assistance to the teacher with the difficult class is modeling a love for the profession, which will encourage the staff and create a positive school climate. It is important to realize that the climate of a school goes beyond the staff and includes the students and their parents or guardians. One Indiana elementary school principal actively promotes a positive atmosphere by having teachers commit to sending a positive communication to the parents of each student within the first two months of the school year (Collins, 2014, “Reach Out to Parents,” para. 1). Initiatives of this nature require the principal to model the expectations with the staff and to follow-up on completion, in order to ensure that the initiative is effective. Providing an opportunity for teachers to search for positive characteristics in others will reap rewards among the entire staff and school.
