Culture contributes to stress because each culture has its own values and norms. Depending on what your culture values, a certain event that is stressful to one culture may be considered to be of lesser importance to another culture. Traditional cultures and Western cultures tend to express their emotions and reactions to stress differently. Minorities in Western society can experience stress influenced by culture if they have difficulty identifying with one or both cultures they are apart of. As mentioned in our textbook, a study of African Americans showed that almost all African Americans reported some kind of racial discrimination and they found it to be stressful. Immigrants moving to a new country can experience acculturation or culture
