The Role Of Sirens In Sounds Of Odyssey

This article of “Sounds Of Odyssey” describes about, Homer who tells three forms of story about Sirens. The article points out that how ancient Greek mythology influenced the music played by Sirens, and what is the history behind it. The author mentions about the stories about Odysseus and his encounter with Sirens. The first part of the story takes place when Circe tells Odysseus about his meeting of Sirens when he returns from underworld. Second part of the story is, when Odysseus and his crewmembers leave for a voyage after meeting with Circe. While on board, Odysseus made known to them the prophecies of the divine Circe as a forewarning. He explains these prophecies by saying to his men “It is not right that only one or two of us should know the prophecies that the divine Circe…beware of the sirens and give their flowery meadow a wide berth, but she instructed me alone to hear their voices” (186). Sirens became aware of the ship and started singing “Draw near, Odysseus, man of many tales, great glory of the Acheans, and bring your ship to rest so that you may hear our honey-sweet tones”. When Odysseus and his soldiers started encountering voices of the Sirens, his soldiers put wax into their ears and Odysseus, who was pleased with the voice, wanted to listen more but he was tightened more with ropes. The voice pleased Odysseus because Sirens use word “ mega kudos Achaion” to describe Odysseus as the great glory of the Greeks.
