Veterans Returning Home “Sixty-one percent of men and 51% of women in the general population report having experienced at least one traumatic experience that qualifies to be considered for PTSD”(Kilic 409).Soldiers go to war to fight for America’s freedom and protect the citizens of America; however, many of their lives change while at war, and they are seeking treatment. Many soldiers get psychological help and many professionals are trying to find different ways to treat the soldiers’ suffering. Upon returning home, soldiers have a hard time assimilating back into civilian life. In Homer’s epic poem…
In Mark Thompson’s article, “Military Sexual Assault Victims Discharged After Filing Complaints,” he makes the point that victims in the military of sexual assault are getting discharged a couple of months after they file a complaint. Thompson gives an example of this in the beginning of the article when he talks about a woman named Emily Vorland. She was discharged from the Army after being sexually harassed after filing a complaint while she was deployed in Iraq. Vorland was discharged seven months after filing the complaint and she was denied six months “of free post-military health care” (Thompson, 1). Thompson mentions that when these victims get discharged from the military after speaking up for themselves they get “no or reduced…
The Power of Shame As the old saying goes, “war is hell.” It is a horrifically life-changing experience that inflicts irreparable trauma, both physiological and psychological. Of those who emerge intact from the battlefield, few are able to ever fully adjust back to civilian life and to reconcile the violence and bloodshed of war with the security and tranquility of life at home. In addition, these soldiers lack the emotional support they require, as fellow veterans are the only ones who can effectively understand the enormous struggles they face daily and the mental burdens that they have to carry for the rest of their lives.…
War is a critical engagement that does not end with the stop of guns t the battle field. More than 17,530 US troops in 2009 were hospitalized for mental disorders. Traumatic brain injury is the most prominent injury that occurs in war with more than 50% of all combat related casualties a result of brain injury. With the advances in treatment and evacuation, however, more wounded soldiers are surviving than they did just a few years ago. However, hundreds of thousands are coming home and suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder with a significant percentage of those who are suffering not realizing they have a condition (Lawhorn & Philpott, 2010).…

Twenty percent of sexual assault victims say it happened in the living quarters, Thirty-four percent say the assault included alcohol and/or drugs used by the victim or the perpetrator, according to a survey by the "Defense Manpower Data Center. Last year eight percent of females in the United States Marine Corps were sexually assaulted, along with 1.1 percent of males. Making the Marine Corps the highest percentage among all of the armed forces. So why would the regimental commander prohibit members of the opposite sex from entering each others rooms? I believe it was because of the high number of sexual assaults in the barracks at the time.…
The door shuts. A heartbroken mother and her kids sit there in turmoil. Its happened over 4 times now and it’s just like the last. Their father, their supporter, has gone to war. Not very many people think about the life of a military child.…
Let me begin by stating that I am in total support of sexual assault reform. While I do agree with the punishments proposed, as well as with the requirement of universities to report cases of sexual assault to the police, I cannot advocate a bill which requires military service men and women to subject themselves to the authority of civilian police. A university may be dubbed an institution, but the military itself is a part of the federal government. The two should not be placed on the same level. The fault with the proposed bill stems from the inadequate research done on how sexual assault is handled in the military.…
Military veterans are among the many who suffer from PTSD (Post-traumatic, 2014). The men and women of the armed forces never know when the day will come when they will need to put their lives on the line. When they will have to make the decision to either take a bullet for a fellow troop or sit there and watch while they die alongside them. War can be very gruesome and exhausting to endure. A great deal of the U.S. population take the ones keeping them safe for granted.…
When coming back from the military training or a war zone many of the veterans suffer from some type of trauma whether it be physical, psychological or sexual. Kabbara (2016), reported that “homeless veterans experienced high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and sexual trauma” (Kabbara, 2016). Also another big issue that female members face is the risk of being exposed to military sexual trauma, sexual assault or repeated sexual harassment while they are in the military service (Kabbara, 2016). According to the Morris (2013), MST is defined as “sexual harassment that is threatening in character or physical assault of a sexual nature that occurred while the victim was in the military, regardless of geographic location of the trauma, gender of victim, or the relationship to the perpetrator.” (Morris et al., 2013).…
In Coventry by Helen Humphreys and Days of Significance by Roy Williams, many sexual and encounters occur. The text prove time and time again that war negatively effects these sexual occurrences. In support of these two texts two films, Overlord and Brothers, and two other texts, Execution by Colin McDougall, and Sand Queen by Helen Benedict show how war can negatively effect sexual encounters. In all of these mediums the sexual interactions it is either rushed, women and once a man are treated awfully, it once is prevented and it almost causes death. War in these sources is the cause to these negative sexual interactions.…

Despite this relatively recent acceptance by the psychiatric community, the notion of traumatic stress has been discussed in the context of military service as far back as the writings of the Ancient Greeks (Shay, 2002). PTSD is still in the process of becoming more appropriately diagnosed and discussed as a serious problem among all military personnel and veterans. The term “post-traumatic sress disorder” was coined in the late 1970’s after the Vietnam War. Another form of PTSD that is frequently experienced by veterans is known as “survivals guilt” (Smith, 2015). This occurs when a veteran returns from active duty and feels guilty that that they had survived while others did…
The Issue of Sexual Assault in the Military In 2013 there were 28,700 military members that were sexually assaulted (Cernak). It is one of the largest issues in the United States military and it is being handled very poorly. All of the militaries time and money being out towards sexual assault are being used on repetitive training that is obviously not working because the numbers of sexual assaults going the wrong direction every year. Because of this training, victims know the options available to them but, they are not reporting them.…
