The gender roles can get a little blurry here. The series was released in 2013 and deals with many modern day issues, such as lesbians and transsexuals who are living together in an all women’s jail. The main characters are primarily females: Piper Chapman, Alex Vause, Nicky Nichols, Miss Pelage, Galina “reds” Reznikov; Males: Sam Healy and Larry Bloom. Piper is the most feminine character and she is frequently ridiculed for it, as most of her counter parts are either butch women or transgender. Alex Vause is portrayed as a tough chick and was the former lover of Piper. Miss Pelage and Reds are both older ladies who neither dress nor act feminine. Sam Healy is the guard who is responsible for keeping the ladies in check and not letting things slide, though when you watch closely you can clearly see that he is more sensitive to the women then he should be, especially those more feminine like Piper. DJ is a prime example of a strong, feminine character. She grew up without a mother, only 3 father-like figures. She now must raise her own child without a father, with only her sister and family’s help. She is very professional and motherly. Stephanie Tanner, the middle child, went from an innocent little girl to a party girl that likes to flaunt what she has. Kimmy Gibbler is another main character in this show. She is extremely quirky, but above everything she will always be there for her friends and exhibit nurturing characteristics. Unlike DJ, Kimmy’s motherly nature is often hidden behind her humor. Jesse and Joey are very different when looking from the outside, but they are both different physical characteristics, they both act as extra male figures in the girls life even as adults. The roles are switched up in this show a lot, the parents are not your stereotypical family with a mother, father and average
