Sometimes it’s trial and error trying to find the right medication for that person. My cousin has been on medication that in some instances the side effects are worse than the disease. After taking the drugs, the hallucinations go away after a few days, but the delusions will take a few weeks to go away completely. If he stops taking the drug treatments suddenly, the symptoms will come back worse than they originally were. He would need to gradually come off of the medication after speaking with a doctor first. The ways to treat schizophrenia, and make living with it manageable, revolve around learning how to recognize signs of relapses and how to cope with recurring symptoms. My cousin is involved with individual therapy sessions with a professional as well as family therapy sessions which help my aunt and uncle how to cope living with somebody that has schizophrenia. Another treatment is social skills training which helps to improve communication skills and interactions in society.
