The Role Of Sarah In The Bible

Improved Essays
Sarah (originally named Sarai) was one of several women in the Bible who were unable to have children. That proved doubly distressing for her because God had promised her husband Abraham that he would be the father of the Jewish nation, with descendants more numerous than the stars in the sky.

Once again, Abraham lies in an alien land and uses Sarah to safeguard his life. Similar to the fate of the Pharaoh, the deity threatens King Abimelech’s life because of Abraham’s deceit. However, this time, the deity states that Abraham is a prophet and informs the king that Abraham has the power to pray for him and save his life. King Abimelech gives Abraham sheep, oxen, and male and female slaves just as the Pharaoh had done in Egypt. Thus, from one narrative to the next, as Abraham journeys through alien lands, he gains not only material resources, including livestock and slaves, which improves his social-economic status, but he also receives land and silver (20:16) and increased socio-religious status and power through his covenant with the Lord and the Lord’s conference of the position “prophet” upon him.…

After this, Elizondo makes a very interesting point come to mind by asking why Jesus should be conceived by the Holy Spirit. The extra credit opportunity I chose to attend was: “How to Interpret The Bible” presented by Mary Healy. This lecture was held in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. I, coming from a religious Christian background did not think I would learn anything that I did not already know, but I was very mistaken. It was very evident to me that Mrs. Healy knew a great deal about the subject matter from the beginning of her delivery. She began by talking about the two different senses that the Bible is interpreted in the spiritual and literal sense.…

In the New Testament, Junia, Pricilla, Phoebe, and Mary Magdalene were four females with leadership roles in the Jesus movement. These females were deaconesses, evangelists, educators, or preachers. The New Testament provides insight into the debate of female leadership and ordination during the early church movement; a debate that continues now. Certain Christian denominations today permit female ordination, while other denominations stand firm against female pastors; both use the New Testament to support their stance. When compared to the denominations that do ordain females, denominations that prohibit female ordination lack a fully developed theological foundation for their positions and ignore Scripture supporting female leadership and…
