It can be practically anything: a mere custom in a small town, a reason to undergo change, or a place to free you from the toils and troubles of men. But in Gary Shmidts novel, he carves an exceptionally harsh portrayal of religion, settling the novel in the middle of Phippsburg, a city embedded in the forces of racism. Motive lies behind every action we take, and can often cause an action that is seemingly good to become immoral. The motives behind our beliefs are no exception, and as a result Christians are subject to immoral Christian belief; an immorality that lies in the motive and not in the consequence. When one devotes oneself to Christianity under desires other than to seek the truth and find God, the faith loses its validity and becomes one of mercenary affairs instead of Godly affairs. These desires take many forms and are laced throughout C.S. Lewis’ writings Throughout The Screwtape Letters, Lewis most explicitly states the desire to bolster a cause and rally a group together as an illegitimate motive for adopting Christian ideas.…

Throughout all facets of history, religion exists as a forceful and manipulative force imprisoning society through totalitarian control. It could be argued that this control is executed through a plethora of brainwashing techniques similar to those within Orwell’s dystopian nation of Oceania in 1984. A detailed analysis reveals parallels to religion within the text. Though this religious connotation may not exist as an initial, intended outcome of the author; ideals of modern philosophers like Michael Foucault can indirectly substantiate these interpretations from comparative studies in discipline and hierarchy: “ The exile of the leper and the arrest of the plague do not bring with them the same political dream…hierarchy surveillance, observation, writing… this is the utopia of the perfectly governed city… power of mind over mind” (Foucault 284,293). This essay attempts to prove that Orwell’s usage of symbols and motifs throughout the novel develops an allusion to religion.…

Indulgences are one of the most controversial traditions in the Catholic Church. They have impacted the Church for hundreds of years and were a major factor in the Protestant schism within Christianity. Indulgences have had positive results but are often abused. The Church’s Confession of Faith (CCF) is a reliable source for a detailed explanation of what indulgences are and how they work, but fails to capture the importance of indulgences in a historical context and their impact on Christianity.
