In today’s society, I perceive myself as white, male, heterosexual, able-bodied, upper-class, college-educated, and Jewish. That is a gift in today’s world. I am fortunate to come from a privilege background, but I recently started to have more sense of appreciation of my white privilege ever since I started to take a Gender, Race, and Class course. One of the readings that really caught my eye was “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy Mcintosh, and in her article, she discusses how some people who have white privilege do not seem to recognize the privilege that they have. She gives numerous of examples on how white privilege helps in real life encounters.…
History shows the cruel and hideous habits and rulings of the people against other races. Races that deserved their freedom and earned the right to be treated equally. Two major events that proved this sickening mannerism was the relocation of the Japanese Americans and Nazi treatment of the European Jews. The Nazis were putting European Jews into death camps and taking their rights of a human being. The Japanese, like the Jews, were also put into camps but they were internment camps.…
Birthed into our society as a marginalized individual encompasses sociohistorical obstructions that hinder one’s life chances in attaining equality amongst the hegemonic group. These obstructions are historically formed both latent, and manifest through legitimacies such as law and through social consensus of norms, beliefs, and values. Such obstructions are called gender and racial projects consisting of ideals, stereotypes, and laws that help shape boundaries of groups. Racial formations are defined by Michael Omi and Howard Winant, as the “sociohistorical process by which racial categories are created, inhabited, transformed, and destroyed” (69). Collectively, racial projects form racial formations, a process of racial interactions we conform…

Imagine a monotonous world, where people possessed the same tone and features as others around them. Now imagine this monotonous world became a place of existence through colonization, and abrogated practices of uniformity to an idea of supremacy. Because every person’s physical makeup would then be the equivalent of the other, this hypothetical place could possibly eliminate discriminatory acts against individuals, and groups based on race, or skin color. Unfortunately, we do not live in this world. Instead we live in a world where society separates, group, and ostracize us based on our differences.…
Imagine a world where everyone was treated equally despite your race, gender, sexuality, or even disabilities. Segregation is the action of separating something or someone apart from other people. Segregation is usually thought to be the separation between blacks and whites in the 1900’s. In this time period, blacks were thought of as inferior to whites. The Jim Crow Laws limited opportunities for black people due to the color of their skin.…
Racial segregation is the separation of humans based on their ethnicity or color. (Long, Russ ch8) Segregation was mainly present in the years of 1849-1950s. The “separate but equal” called laws that were made to separate humans was a law that prohibited those with different ethnicities from using the same restrooms as whites, eating at the same place as white, and speaking to whites otherwise the minority would be severely punished. Racial segregation is often said to be similar to racial discrimination, but that is false.…

Racial segregation can be defined as a separation of people based on their race who live in a fixed boundary. Each group experiences the same life styles by participating in the same activities or eating the same foods but just in another part of town. The book Maniac Magee can be compared to the artwork New Kids in the Neighborhood in several ways by creating a mood dictated through the setting of racism. The setting of Maniac Magee takes place in a small town called Two Mills where blacks and whites are separated by Hector Street.…
When examining the history of race around the world, it can be said that the concept of race is always in flux. It is never permanent, and always changing because of shifting historical, economic and social factors. The same may apply to racial categories, which can vary from country to country. Racial categories, like race, are subject to constant fluctuation because of shifting ideas in race. In this, it is evident that race and racial categories have been created to stratify and subjugate certain groups of people, while enforcing the dominance of others.…
Societies, ancient and modern, have always had notions that have originated divides in humans. In antiquated times people were divided by ideologies such as religion, class, or status rather than physical appearances. The idea of racial divides is fairly new compared to older boundaries that resulted in segregation. Although slavery has existed throughout the entirety of the human race, it is believed that “racism” was not introduced until the introduction of African American slavery. Retrospectively, race perhaps was not meant to develop into what it is today.…
The Jews’ desire to live deteriorates through their loss of identity, inhumane treatment, and their loss of dignity. As strong as the Jews are, no one can tolerate the utterly painful dehumanization that was bestowed upon them…
Mayella Ewell and Dolphus Raymond as victims of the 'Time-Honored Code '. Segregation. the action or state of setting someone or something apart from other people or things. In the nineteen hundred, this was quite common as one would often see the separation of two distinct races, (black and white) in everyday life. It became deeply ingrained in society with the legalization of the Jim Crow Laws, which promoted a society of racial oppression, and destroyed all efforts of a true democracy.…

The dehumanization of the Jews is portrayed in various scenes such as the overcrowding conditions of the ghettos and in the train cars where the Jews are shown to be in dire and perilous conditions. Discrimination is defined as “unjustified negative or harmful action toward a member of a group solely because of his or her membership in that group” (Aronson, Wilson, Akert, Sommers, 2016). It is important to note the progressive movement from prejudice to discrimination that developed during the years leading up to mass…
