The Role Of Refugees In Inside Out & Back Again

A refugee can be any person who has left their home because they are afraid for their safety if they stay. Once refugees leave home, they have to find refugee camp in another country until they can resettle into a new home. When refugees flee, their lives twist and turn inside out because of all the changes they go through and everything they leave behind or lose. This is very challenging for many people to go through; as soon as refugees resettle, their lives start to turn back again when they move past the changes and their host community works with them as peers and equals. In the novel Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai, Ha and her family are living in the middle of the Vietnam war. Ha is 10 years old and likes to push boundaries while …show more content…
If we shut them out and don’t try to understand their problems, they will never get better. Many don’t realize it but children need about as much help as the parents do. Some don’t think that children grieve because they think they don’t understand. With the right help, even Ha got better along with her family. “Tears gush...Exited I yell...Du du..Best food.” ( Lai 197,202) The whole meaning of these stanzas in the poem were that Ha was crying, but because she is turning back again with the help of Miss Washington. She puts it in the past and brings back a happy memory of home and not a sad one. At the beginning of the book Ha was hopeful that her father was still alive. There were times when she lost hope and others when she gained it back. But finally she heard the news. “ Your father is truly gone.” (Lai 250) This gave closure to Ha because she no longer has to worry or fear, but now she can relax. She is on her way back because she accepts that her father is really gone and now she can make a recovery, now that she has closure. Refugees and Immigrants both go through grieving process differently. Ha is just learning the hard way. She is not the childish or determined or strong willed little girl she used to be. Now, she is starting over and is a new person. Kids and children who are refugees can get over the grief and pain with proper attention, if we listen and help, they will get better over …show more content…
Losing everything you have ever known would turn your life inside out especially when you don’t have any family to lean against. When refugees lose family members, they start to feel that their lives have no meaning anymore. In the “Children at War” text, Amela said, “Before the war I really enjoyed life. But after I found out about my father’s death, everything seemed so useless I couldn’t see any future for myself” (Brice 26).
