Racism is a key idea presented about 1930s America in the novel ‘Of Mice and Men’. In Chapter 2, we see that George and Lennie arrive late to the ranch which the boss isn’t happy with. We then find out the boss decides to take his anger out on the stable buck which already shows the lack of fairness there is in Crooks’ life. Then, Candy goes on to describe Crooks to George and Lennie, “Ya see the stable buck’s a nigger”. The word “nigger” suggests that this is how Crooks is known, and therefore people prefer not to call him by his name, but by his race.
