Micah J. Hough’s Journal #2 Chapters; 9-15 Entry 1; War of 1812 The War of 1812 was the first time the United States declared war one anyone, one the reasons that led to the cause of the War of 1812 was the British impressment of American sailors, were they would be kidnapped and force into servitude, this disrupted shipping of goods and it violated American sovereignty. But from the British Impressment Policy, not only did it disrupted the American shipping to France (which both countries were at war at the time), it led an opportunity to gain new sailors to strengthen their war efforts. This also stopped the U.S.A to free trade, stopping them from trading to any other European country except England as a tactic form of economic warfare (During the time tensions started to rise and there were other who wanted to push for war, aka Warhawks like Henry Clay). Another reason is Canada since the U.S.A was still in the action of the Jeffersonian model and wanted expansion of their power and was continuing to move westward across…

The increasing hostility between the North and the South, and ultimately secession of the South and the Civil War was unavoidable because both regions constantly bumped heads regarding slavery and states’ rights. When trying to decide how to resolve the issues, neither could produce an efficient and solid plan without offending each other. From proposing the Wilmot Proviso post-Mexican War to the election of Lincoln, the country was slowly slipping into an uneasy environment. The South constantly felt betrayed and always worried about having equal representation in Congress.…

The topic I chose to analyze from the book Taking Sides is rather the Civil War fought over slavery. This issue occurred in the 18th century and impacted black slaves and whites across the United States. Prior to the Civil War in the southern states (which declared themselves as the Confederate states when they separated from the United States) there were lands that included laborious work and the slaves would do the labor from sunup to sundown. The Confederate states desired to have more slave states and they declared secession from the United States. The Union noticed the Confederate states as a threat and a group of rebels who wanted more power but, the Union wanted balance and would continue to have power.…

With time though slaves were no longer in the northern states and only in the southern. The economy and politics in the south never really changed. The South embraced their ways and viewed them as the best, while the North advanced and changed greatly. The North was now filled with factories and produced a large percentage of finished goods, but the cotton of the South made up the largest percentage of the countries exported goods. The south had a rather distinct class system planters being the richest and so on and at the bottom are slaves.…

    1. The Civil War was very different from past conflicts. To start, African Americans played a huge role in the Civil War. For the North, African Americans were enlisted in the army and fought alongside other Americans, and for the South, African Americans slaves were “camp servants,” for their masters. The slaves would cook meals, raise tents, and carry supplies for their masters.…

Initially, no one really was in favor of the idea but as the war wore on and more soldiers died, people became more interested in the idea. Abraham Lincoln eventually supported it, understanding that they were willing to fight and taking advantage of that fact. Despite how unpopular the idea was in general, he went ahead and allowed the creation of all-black regiments because he knew that whites were, at this point, uninterested in fighting to free the slaves while the African Americans were ready to go fight and possibly even die for the sake of their brethren and the preservation of the Union (Doc. C). Once it became a major war aim of the Union to end slavery, African Americans in the north were subject to random acts of violence, especially once a draft began for the Union army. Draft riots began, the most violent occurring in New York City.…

Economically the regions were very different, with the North being very industrial and independent, and the South relying heavily on the export of cotton to pay for the goods they needed to import. The federal government had a hard time creating fair taxes to keep both regions happy. Politically, the South fiercely believed in states' rights, while the North felt that a strong federal government could best lead the nation. Socially, the North and South differed on the issue of slavery and led very different lifestyles. Abolitionists fought for African-American freedom while many Southerners fought to keep the workers they needed to run their plantations.…

America's current battle with racism is an unfortunate example of when history "repeats itself." The issues regarding racial inequality were confronted in the Civil War, then again during the Reconstruction era. Despite the efforts of both these events, racial conflicts still exist today. The Civil war is taught in schools to be the conflict that ended with the abolishment of slavery. While this marked a turning point in American history, racist belief systems did not disappear.…

The North and South have always followed different paths and by the mid 1800’s the differences were even more pronounced. The North was becoming more industrial, dedicated to immigration, free labor and supported a federal government. Slavery was not common in the North and it was even banned in some states. The South’s agricultural economy was founded on slavery and cotton and they supported a government that allowed states to make their own rules. Southerners viewed the North and their views as them trying to destroy Southern culture with their industrialism and growing abolitionist movement.…

For instance, education was a big difference between the North and the South. Everyone valued education, but in the South there was not any public school where children could attend unlike the North. Because there was plenty of land in the South, each landowner lived on their own land causing everyone one to be distant. Distance was the reason preventing public school from being built because there was not enough children from an area to start a school. In contrary, there was more people in the North living together in a small area which mean that there was enough people in an area for a school to start a school.…
