The Role Of Racial Discrimination In America

Improved Essays
When asked by what I wanted to see a change in America. Why was my answer immediately about racism? Is it because we are a species that judge each other by appearance? I would like to believe that a future without racism or racial discrimination is obtainable. But can we as a population really create a world that can be similar to my vision: All of society seen as equal individual.

As a sophomore in high school, I found it disappointing that the only future I care to live in is a future that has an unbiased humanity. From my 15 years of living, I have seen nothing but prejudice against ethnicity that resembles anything other than the “average” caucasian skin tones. When growing up with a multicultural surrounding, I never really asked why many of my classmates look different from each other. As a child, I accepted a main fact: people are uniquely different. Yet, when you move to an area where the other children were deprived from that important life lesson. You automatically feel separated from the rest. I wish for my grandchildren never to look at an african american boy and feel alarmed or a puerto rican girl and automatically assume she is an illegal immigrant. From experiences I’ve witnessed too many injustice against races. I long for a difference from my homeland, America.

A child being raised in America can not thrive when constantly presumed to be or act like something they appear to be. For example, how does a flower grow when it constantly has dirt being thrown on to it? An african american child can not be successful when society has a negative view of their race. Fried chicken, purple Kool-Aide, the term “ghetto”. Why are those words only associated to african american

Hispanics, Latinos, and Mexican-Americans, whether legal or not, have been discriminated against in the United States since they came to the land said to be built upon freedom and equality. They have became an ethnic, social, and linguistic minority in a vastly white English speaking majority. Through appealing to morals, examples of discrimination, and the use of statistics, Gibson emphasizes the urgency and magnitude of the problem of Hispanic discrimination in America. By appealing to the morals of his non-Hispanic audience, Gibson effectively proves that discriminating against Hispanics is clearly the wrong thing to do and that our society needs to come together to stop this problem. He begins his argument by saying what truly “makes…

America has not always the great country we have been lead to believe. Since the end of the civil war, racism against blacks grew greater and greater with every passing day making it harder for these people to live their lives. This leads to the unfair treatment of immigrants trying to find a new life in America after being pushed out of their countries by poverty, revolution, and starvation. These events happen with an incompetent government only interested in doing anything to benefit itself. America has treated the people living within and arriving at the country with discrimination with an incompetent government.…

We all have a dream, no matter what our color is. In this world segregation is no longer needed because we are all equal as human beings no matter what our color is. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about that he had a dream where we can all live together in harmony and as one. Where a black man can be in the same area as a white man; where a black child can play with a white child. Living on this wonderful world would be better if we can only come together and not pull each other away.…

Since 1492, when Columbus arrived in the Indies and began to exploit the Native people living there, race has been a controversial issue in America (Zinn 6). Soon after Columbus, Europeans began importing African slaves for labor (Gates 3). In ancient times, people had different views of what race meant: some viewed race as being a representation of where one were currently living, while others insisted that it was based upon where one came from, or how they looked (Aronson 131). Regardless of the accepted definition, this discrepancy proves that race is based on completely superficial prejudices and does not reflect any “natural inferiority.” Race-based slavery has played an important role throughout American history, which differs from other…

The sentence, “And you are not the guy and still you fit the description because there is only one guy who is always the guy fitting the description” is repeated. I think it’s repeated because the author want to remind us that there is always someone mistaken for the criminal. This is important because in the black community, people are always being frisk for unjustified reasons or rather they fit the description. Everytime I read that sentence, I start to think deeper and and ask myself why is there always one other person that fits the criminal description? I learned in my American Government class that black people are the highest victims of stop and frisk.…

In the early 20th century Europeans were not considered, to American’s standard, as white—even if some Europeans were clearly Caucasians (Omi and Winant, pg. 21). Then in the early 1900s, Americans adopted the phrase “separate but equal”. Now in the 21st century, people, regardless or color, now have the same opportunities for a better life. While people of different backgrounds aren’t looked down upon much anymore, nothing is perfect. There are still those few individuals who simply cannot fathom the idea of accepting other people with different backgrounds—this is something we must accept.…

Why is racism so deeply rooted among American history? Why is something as simple as skin color such subject to prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? The United States of America is built off of cruel acts of slavery and racism. So many white Americans did not realize that the acts they performed were horribly wrong and inhumane. They excused themselves simply because darker skin meant that that person was also inferior.…

One of the attitudes of the African American towards job searching is that they have the fear of being discriminated by their white counterparts who happen to be their employers in most of the time. Another fear is that of harassment by their employers and being underpaid as compared to other employees who are working in the same positions. Another attitude is that they fear being demoralized or being intimidated by their employers, and even being used wrongly. Some of the enlightened African Americans have self-motivation despite the social norms that are constructed on a racial basis.…

This is a huge task in the eyes of most people, but there is 7.2 billion people in the world (U.S. News). If everyone joined together and took small steps, racism could come to an end. To do this people are going to have to work together, and show each other that they are all equal in their own unique way. People will have to step across the awkward boundaries that have been created by the stereotypes of the world and reach out to each other to become friends with one another, and show them that it is okay to be different and that it is okay to be friends with someone who is different. There is so many ways that people can do this, in every place.…
