Crohn’s Disease is a systemic autoimmune disorder progressively rising in the United States. People of all ages are affect. But, it seems to be more dominant in people between the ages of 14 – 35, including those that smoke cigarettes, family members with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Jewish descent. Crohn’s disease is chronic, causing abnormal inflammation in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, affecting the end of the small intestine to the beginning of large intestine. It affects the mental and physical capacity of the individual, causing one to feel worthless and depressed because of the complications from the disease. Although, they haven’t yet found the cause of Crohn’s disease. Their theory is the disease is cause from a combination of genetics, environment, and autoimmune factors. The significant factor is the immune system. Understanding that the immune system defends our body from infection by identifying and destroying bacteria, virus and other foreign substance. The researchers believe bacteria or virus activate Crohn’s autoimmune reaction causing inflammation. This results in the body immune system attacking and destroying healthy body tissue of the intestine. Layers of the intestine have inflammation which causes harden, thicken, swelling, scarring, and ulcers. Today, mycobacteria is being explored as possible pathogens involved in the development of Crohn’s disease (Colonna). Genetics, show that a person that has a family member with Crohn’s might also develop the disease. Crohn’s causes the immune system to attack the inner lining of the intestine tract producing inflammation, swelling, and irritation. Symptoms from Crohn’s ranges from mild to severe. The causes are from environment elements, genetics, and the immune system. Diagnosis and treatment are crucial to manage disease process. In the United States, Crohn’s disease affects a variety of people. My sister is in that population, I have seen her pain and distress to live with a disease that has no cure, but, only treatment. With proper medical care, most people who have Crohn 's disease are able to lead long and productive lives. New medications and research are helping to increase the quality of life for people who have Crohn 's
