The Role Of Pride In The Necklace

Pride is the state of holding one's self or another in high esteem. In the short story “ The Necklace” the main character, Madame Loisel, learns the role pride plays in her life. Although she lived in the upper middle class, Madame Loisel felt she was poor and became unsatisfied with her life. She wanted the world and all its riches and believed she deserved better. Being so hungover in what she didn’t have or what she couldn’t have she lost sight in how good her life already was. She had so much pride and high self worth in herself that she was unaware of others who would trade lives in a heartbeat. In life being too prideful may lead us to hold ourselves back from a greater prize. If you think so highly of yourself you may try and protect your status instead of reaching for a higher goal . If you tell yourself you're the best but you have nothing to support it, you may end up realizing that you aren't as important as you may have thought you were.If you build a wall too high it eventually is going to fall and the break is not easily restored. The fall representing realization of overly high esteem leads to having to build your wall up all over again . Having too much pride and then messing up causes things to hurt ten times worse because it’s everything coming down at once. If you are honest with yourself and others you break a piece to build another twice as strong. If you are overly prideful you tend to think of only yourself. Madame Loisel was so focused on her pride and getting herself to the top and her own well being that she forgot about the one person that really cares- her husband. He was always there for her. Having her be so self centered she didn't even realize all the effort he had done to try and help
