First the school books handed down from the state is one of the first racist problems. On the inside of the book is a list showing the quality of the book and the race of the owner. Instead of saying African American or even black it just says n**** and the quality being very poor. This shows injustice behavior by the whites telling the African Americans they only deserve very poor quality and outdated books. There Cassie goes with T.J. and Stacy to the store to get T.J.’s things but then is yelled at and told to wait because of her dark skin. She then is confused and mad and decides to go get Big Ma and get her to sort things out. On the way she bumps into Lillian Jean. Lillian Jean then tells her to walk in the road like the trash she is when her father comes and shoves Cassie on the ground and starts yelling at her. They try to get her to apologize after she already did earlier. Finally Big Ma hears all the commotion and goes to get Cassie and leave. This then causes Mama to tell Cassie about the way of life and makes Cassie put together a brilliant plan to get back at Lillian Jean.
So there was racial prejudice in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry that the characters had to deal with throughout the book. It is terrible that people had to deal with this stuff in real life in that time period. In conclusion the racial difficulties the Logan family had to face are did not only help set the stage for other parts, but also sadly
