Rhetorical Analysis of Bjorn Staerk’s “Living with Terrorism” “Living with Terrorism,” is a blog post written by Norwegian blogger Bjorn Staerk on bearstrong.net in 2006. In this essay, Steark provides his perspective on how to manage and cope with the sensitive topic of worldwide terrorism. Intended for the conservative public, this essay is also written as a rebuttal to the far-right and anti-Islamic Norwegian blogger Peder Are Nøstvold Jensen (aka Fjordman). Fjordman suggested in one of his blogs that Islam, not Islamism--the reform movement that advocates the reordering of government and society in accordance with laws prescribed by Islamic beliefs-- was the culprit behind terrorism, and this greatly displeased Staerk’s Universalist creed…

Before the terrorists attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States was at war with Iraq and had a presence in Saudi Arabia which lead to conflict to terrorist groups and terrorists attacks within the US, but no action was taken that would change American politics, society, or foreign policy. After the attacks, everything changed. The US became much strict in its search for and elimination of terrorism, both within the country and around the world. The events also brought the country together, but at the same time separated the country into parties and groups. We also wanted to spread democracy to prevent the spread and start of terrorism.…
Pros and Cons of American Imperialism America is one of the most powerful nations of the world. Its sheer size, economy, territories, and technological advancements make it so influential that many smaller nations or cultures look up to America as if it were a god. Many decades ago, America established its dominance over other nations, particularly during the two world wars by showing off its military prowess and interfering with what are supposedly local affairs of other governments. Imperialism is more of a negative idea than a positive one – it signifies a nation's thirst for expansion at the expense of others.…
Many comparable definitions of what constitutes as “terrorism” exist today, but Bruce Hoffman provides one of the most complete definitions in his book Inside Terrorism. He affirms that terrorism is (1) violence, or the threat of violence, (2) with political goals, (3) that is carried out by a group (4) or organization, (5) that has widespread ramifications and consequences (Hoffman, 2-3). Although there are a host of potential causes of Islamic terrorism, only one can adequately explain its dissension with the United States: the perpetual class struggle that goes on between the United States and the Middle East. Possible causes of Islamic terrorism include religious beliefs, ideological beliefs, oppressive political regime, etc. The goal of…
The most memorable terrorist attack from 2001 to 2015 was on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11, 2001 (Paul, Dorin, Bugnar, and Mester 6). About three-thousand innocent people lost their lives during this violent attack (“Department of Government and Justice Studies”). This important event in American History should be remembered to hopefully prevent it from ever happening again. As terrorism changed from the 1980s to today, so did the types of people who became terrorists (O’Connor). This paper will look at what terrorism is, the types of terrorism, who becomes terrorists, and what their motives may be.…
Topic II: Discourses A great nation doesn 't just form in a day. It is a process in which great ingenuity and wisdom is needed. With this great wisdom, the founding fathers wrote the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These renowned documents are used as a foundation for this nation to reign supreme for countless of years.…
I believe in a safe, but yet still free America. In its early years, America was established so that citizens could feel safe no matter what they believed in, or any unique physical trait they possessed Whether it is our military, police, firemen, or any other officer that serves our country, they all work to keep us safe, secure, and maintain all of our rights. Almost all countries in the world have a military. The military keeps out foreign trouble. One of the reasons many people love America is because of the protection they receive under the stars and stripes.…
A Comparison of Terrorism in 1975 with Terrorism Today Terrorism has been a major contributor to the way that society is currently set up in the twenty-first century. The public response to the presence of terrorists is often the exact kind of reaction that these operations are aiming for. When George W. Bush claimed that the terrorists hated America because of its freedom (which is obviously a gross oversimplification of the motivations behind terrorist attacks) he was ironically signing various bills such as the Patriot Act that would constrict the freedoms of the American people. Therefore, if the terrorists had wanted to affect the freedom of the American people it very clearly did through the attacks on September eleventh.…
America's Gift to My Generation America actually isn't that horrible when you think about it. The United States by far the best military. America has the best economy, and a highly exceptional wealth and healthcare ranking too. And last year, according to U.S. News and World Report, America was the fourth best country. I wonder why.…
The purpose behind criminalizing trade secret theft was to create a disincentive for malicious actors to steal the intellectual property of others. Other than piecemeal legislation for underlying offenses and the Espionage Act of 1917, no federal laws adequately addressed economic and industrial espionage. Espionage has existed for thousands of years where spies stole military secrets from their adversaries (Nasheri, 2005). It was a way to remain militarily competitive by observing an enemies troop level or tactics. Following the American Revolution, the US found itself in the midst of significant labor shortages and employed ways of acquiring the technology of others and luring the specialists who understood those technologies.…
Terrorism is defined as “an intentional act or acts of violence of sabotage targeting individuals or groups, especially civilians”. Terrorism nearly always has “political motives” and the primary targets almost always being civilians. Certain kinds of violence horrify the “modern sensibility, while others do not. “The modern sensibility sees most political violence as necessary to historical progress”. Looking back, the French Revolution brought terror, along with bringing a citizens’ army.…
Over 40% of suicide bombers are female and come from all over the world (Pape). The most common areas where suicide bombers are present are Russia, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. That isn’t to say that bombers aren’t in other places because they certainly are. These are just the most common areas. Suicide bombers can be anywhere for any reason.…
In the book The Psychology of Radicalization and Terrorism, the writers claim that economic deprivation is often referred to when discussing radicalisation. In a new approach, Koomen and van der Pligt (2016) agrees that economic deprivation acts as a threat to terrorists and their groups. Economic deprivation means being confined to limited social and economic opportunities such as poor healthcare; an insecure future; poor educational opportunities; etc. Koomen and van der Plight (2016) adds that being on the economic margins could lead to discrimination from the ‘wealthier’ group of people in the same country.…
Martha Crenshaw’s 1981 article “The Causes of Terrorism” outlines an analysis on the causes of terrorism by examining the preconditions, precipitants, reasons, the psychological aspects of the individual. Crenshaw attempts to show the reader the causes of terrorism in this article. She begins by providing a definition of terrorists. She defines terrorism as the premeditated use or threat of violence committed by a group of people in order to convey a political message. She then divides her paper into three distinct categories that explore the framework, the reasons, and the motivation for terrorism.…
