My family background as a surrogate father to six younger siblings has prepared me to listen compassionately and give advice as needed. Also, in my capacity as a nursing home minister I have had the opportunity to reach out to lonely and confused patients. The role of pastoral counselor is, of course, much broader and much more inclusive as far as the needs of prospective clients are concerned. What I have read and learned it has been clear that it is not enough to be counselor. A family system has a critical and unique role to pay within the system. No matter setting looks like the same system. Now within this system I see myself under the scale of differentiation subtitle extended family with one tribe. What I mean by tribe? According to the dictionary definition: it is a social division in a traditional society consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious, or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect, typically having a recognized leader ( Web). I grew up in Southern Sudan in a rural area. I was born into an extended tribal family, which included both sets of grandparents, my mother and father, my six brothers and one sister, my father’s five brothers and their wives and children, all in all between 40 and 50 persons. Although the various family units lived in separate houses, the houses were all on the same property and life was lived together, raising livestock and crops to feed everyone.
