The purpose of this paper is to uncover and evaluate the role of nurse advocate in the delivery of patient-centered care. “Patient centered nursing interventions are a response to the needs of patients, and the coordination and individualization of care, skill, and expertise” (Esmaeili, Cheraghi, & Salsali, 2014, p. 3). In the past, studies have shown that there is a positive correlation between patient-centered care and desirable health outcomes. Patient-centered care allows for better distribution of time for the delivery of care, lower treatment costs, shorter hospitalization stays, and earlier discharge, all of which ultimately improve patient satisfaction rates (Esmaeili, Cheraghi, & Salsali, 2014).

Emily is a twenty-seven year old female who she is single and does not have any children. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication studies and currently works as an airline employee. Her parents serve as her primary support system, since they are aware of the health issues she has had since she was a child. For a young woman, she has a fairly extensive past medical history. At age seven, Emily was diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after surgery for a septic hip. Also, she was diagnosed with Lupus and fibromyalgia due to her increased joint and muscle pain. Recently, she went to her local emergency room seeking care for her left hip. Emily was unable to move her hip, so she was hoping to get a cortisone shot in her hip to reduce inflammation and ease her pain. She reported that the care team seemed to have thorough communication with one another and seemed to have no issues working together as a team. Emily felt like she was listened to regarding her concerns and reported that each health care provider was attentive and empathetic. She reported that all the nurses were friendly, helpful, and professional towards her, but they all seemed to be in a hurry.
