The Importance of the Civil War The Civil War in 50 Objects, by Henry Holzer and the New-York Historical Society, is a collection of fifty primary sources, varying in type and format. Each of these objects is accompanied by a description of the source, as well as a story which establishes the source in the proper context in history. Through the sources Holzer shows the importance of the Civil War, especially for the people who lived through it. The Civil War transformed the United States in many ways, bringing lasting change to our nation, and establishing the war as important to everyone in the country, even up to today.…
Freedman and the Skirmish for Rights The Civil War was a time of hardship, adversity, misfortune, and tribulation for African Americans. Beatings, burnings, and slaughters are just the beginning of what the colored people of the Civil War endured. Amongst the many things freedman pursued, what the colored people showed to want most “during and after Civil War was their own land to farm and to get an education.”…
From reading For Cause and Comrades, I learned about several motivations and reasons that soldiers from the North and the South fought in the Civil War. Overall, the soldiers and their respective sides fought for very similar reasons and motives. Both sides were fighting for their views on slavery, how the states should govern laws, and how the economy should operate. I plan to analyze and compare the motives for the North and the South and show how each side was fighting for remarkably similar reasons. Through the reasons and motives listed above, we will be able to see the similarities but, also we will be able to see how each side was different as well.…
The Civil War was one of the most memorable and historical wars in America. The conflicting beliefs of the north and south lead to a war that consisted of at least 616,000 casualties. Originally, the war began in hopes to prevent the states of the south from leaving the Union of the U.S. States of the south seceded because of a difference of ideas regarding slavery. Some people believe that slavery was the primary cause of the Civil War, though slavery did play a major role in the upbringing of the civil war I do not believe that it was the dominant cause of the war. The first reason that I believe that the statement that the Civil War’s primary cause was slavery is incorrect is that the war began, to prevent disunion in the U.S but, slavery was only a factor that would cause disunion or secession of the south.…
Introduction The American civil started purely as a military effort with limited political objectives especially for the white community. By early 1861 white citizen’s main aim of the fight was to preserve the union and as well maintain a democratic republic. The north fought for reunification whereas the south fought for independence during the initial stages of the civil war. However, the war changed between 1862 and 1863 as a result of emancipation.…
Why did so many people feel it was necessary to fight? Many people felt it was necessary to fight because there were to many slaves and some people wanted equal rights. The north wanted equal rights and no slaves. The south had slaves and didn't want anything to change. To this day we have simple human rights and we have freedom, no slaves.…
Maryland in the mid-nineteenth century had bizarre features that were not existent in the other American states. It had an evident split in politics, economy, and culture. Yet, it managed to evade its conflicted temperament until the talk of secessionism ascended the inhabitants within her terrain. After the attack upon Fort Sumter on September April 12, 1861, the American Civil War became unpreventable. Maryland watched its neighbors convert into Northern and Southern support-zones.…
It has been stated the Civil War was a “rich man’s battle” but a “poor man’s war.” With that in mind, it applies to both the Union and the Confederate Soldiers. Located in the textbook, the following statement, “the beacon of light of liberty and freedom to the human race”, by Samuel McIIvaine provides support of the war being a poor man’s war. (Foner, 2014) The following paragraphs will provide evidence of why the social class help fuel the desire for certain states to secede from the Union.…
The Horse Soldiers The movie is set during the American civil war. The fight was not going well for the northern as the southern had inflicted a heavy loss on them. To avert further losses, the railway engineer Colonel Marlowe comes up with a plan. This plan was to avoid fighting until they arrived in a new town station which would translate to an average of 35 miles a day. Later on, a military doctor by the name Major Henry Kendal shows up.…
During the Civil War, many men felt the urge to stand up for their country and enroll in the army. But the downside is that some families had different beliefs, causing different parts of a family to live in either the north or south. When it would come time for battle, families would end up fighting each other and possibly kill a loved one. This didn't just happen between the Union and the Confederacy, and it was more likely to happen in border states. These states were not claimed by either the north or south, for there were many people who had different opinions on what side they wanted to fight with.…
Was the Civil War predictable? Did any events indefinitely cause the South to desire a split from the North? The North and the South had a growing tension between them for many reasons, and the northern abolitionists encouraged a Civil War through their actions of protest. Although many Americans were affected minimally by the changes of the nation, abolitionists inevitably foresaw a Civil War because the growing tensions between the North and the South became apparent in political and social changes, slavery issues, and the growing occurrence of rebellions. Political and social changes occurred in many ways, including The Second Great Awakening, Lincoln’s presidential election to office, the way the North and the South dealt with one another,…
When faced with war, people need to know what they’re fighting for. This is something that many people confuse these days. When asked what the Civil War was about, the majority say it was about slavery. They wanted to stop slavery right? That is a tricky question.…
Civil War Looking back at history, it would be easy to say that if someone had done something differently, then the major conflict would have been avoided. Putting oneself in their position is a completely different story. Most of the people involved in major events in history did what they could to prevent to inevitable. The Civil War was just that: inevitable. The United States was bound to run into the conflicts that it did being a newer Country.…
Introduction The American Civil war occurred during the years 1861 – 1865, and as stated in the article titled “The Civil War”, it “was the cauldron that created modern America. The war preserved the Union, ending the possibility of the American nation dividing into two or more separate countries, in the process altering the nations politics and government, creating a strong presidency and an increasingly important federal infrastructure” (Finkelman sec. 1) However, the American Civil War did not come without coast, as wars never do, an estimated 620,000 men lost their lives in the line of duty. One of the many, yet major causes of this war, came about through slavery; and the standpoint that the northern states took, wanting to abolish slavery,…
Read pages 482-485 Focus Question (page 482): The admission of new states to the Union fueled the debate by interrupting the balance between the number of slave states and free states. According to the textbook, it states, “[T]erritory gained by the Mexican-American War threatened to destroy the balance.” In the senate this would mean one side would have more power than the other due to popular vote. Both the North and South were opposed to this idea resulting in the debate.…
