The Role Of Nick As The Narrator In The Great Gatsby

Nick as the narrator of the story, I do not think he has achieved the “American Dream”. Nick was more of a bystander then anything. He watched it all and never got a serious role until the last chapter where he was planning Gatsby’s funeral that his character was given a more deserving lead character role. In the story, besides being our narrator he is also Daisy’s cousin and Gatsby’s friend. There is no news of Nick having a wife or anything. Throughout the story, Nick has stayed neutral and a side character, he mostly comes into play in the last few chapters. He’s kind of the person to try and fix the problems or just stay out of them and just listen in.

In the beginning of the story, Nick tells us his father gave him advice that’d he’d

He believes that Gatsby’s American Dream was ultimately corrupt, since both the means and the goal was corrupt: even though Gatsby’s motivation, love, may be said to be pure, his obsession toward this dream caused his means to be corrupt, and even his goal, Daisy, who is a symbol of materialism, was corrupt. “The object of Gatsby’s obsession [was] unworthy of herculean efforts made on her behalf” (Foster 143). Nick saw that Gatsby’s unconditional, inordinate faith in this dream gnawed on him and inhibited him from thinking clearly; while money can be accumulated, social nuance, taste, and aristocracy cannot be obtained, and thus he could never be accepted into Daisy’s circle of society. Nick also compared Gatsby to the Dutch sailors who first arrived at America, whose eyes beheld the “fresh, green breast of the new world” (Ch. 9). “The pioneer vision of America, and Gatsby’s vision of Daisy” (Lehan 123) seem to parallel each other, both of which lack the moral center.…

Many people in the world see the American Dream as something unrealistic. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald all the characters fail to accomplish what they perceive as the American Dream. The novel takes place during the 1920s in New York and is narrated by the character Nick, who is moving from the Midwest to a place called West Egg. He lives across from East Egg, which is where his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom live. When Nick goes over there for dinner one night, we learn that Tom is cheating on Daisy with a woman in New York City named Myrtle.…

Nicks last words to Gatsby before he died was “they’re a rotten crowd... you’re worth the whole damn bunch put together” (154). This quote links to a numerous amount of excerpts from the novel that all convey the shared theme of moral corruption. Nick is complementing Gatsby by saying that he is better than Tom, Daisy, Jordan, or any ‘rotten’ East Egger. This quote transmits a large amount of significance as it ties in Nick’s change in character. Nick is viewed by the reader as a non-judgemental individual who can be trusted.…

Fitzgerald’s Irresponsible Narrator Sometimes the ending of the book is made because of the mistakes of the characters. I think the ending of the a book could change if the characters would have changed their thoughts or actions. Like in the beginning of The Great Gatsby when Nick says “No- Gatsby turned out alright at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men.(pg 7)” Like if Tom was never aggressive of what he wanted.…

The protagonist of a novel is the main character of which the overall plot centers around. Although, in Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s Great Gatspy, Jay Gatspy is often credited as representing the protagonist of the story, Nick Carraway could also be considered a protagonist for his role as a semi-omniscient narrator who serves a the central link between other characters. He also undergoes a personal transformation as the novel progresses, a typical theme of protagonists. In chapters 1 through 3 and throughout the book, Nick Carraway exemplifies a relatable common man who travels East in order to seek economic prosperity following the war.…

Imagine how different the Harry Potter series be if it was told from Voldemort's perspective. Tremendously different right? It’s all about bias and perspective. In The Great Gatsby, there are many characters that could be used as the narrator but shouldn't. Gatsby would paint Tom in a bad light, Tom would paint Gatsby in a bad light (well certainly he did), and Jordan wasn’t exactly there for the entire story so there would certainly be plot holes.…

In the deceitful streets of New York, the night was still. Myself and Gatsby were taking a stroll through the Valley of Ashes after that absurd outbreak of Gatsby’s. In the very beginning of the novel he says that “Only Gatsby… was exempt from my reaction- Gatsby, who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn”(2) when he was discussing his moral ideals. But he goes on further to say that he had “an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person”(2). Nick, throughout the novel, both heavily insulted and complimented Gatsby. We see through this that Nick always seemed to be unable to decide how he truly felt about Gatsby, and what he truly valued in life and in himself. Nick also stated, “Gatsby turned out alright at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men” (2).…
