Now that it is down to the last few months, stress and emotions are really starting to set in. The life-course viewpoint gives better importance to social structure, whereas the developmental method generally tends to emphasis more on psychological issues to explain progressive processes. In many instances, these two approaches have been engaged in the context of similar studies but with slightly different focuses. The idea of crime and punishment was a key part of the formative lessons learned from my parents. Crime touched my life early on and so rather than going on facts, I often looked at it through emotions. Therefore, criminology was definitively black and white without any gray areas. Erroneously, I often thought that once a person committed a crime they should be locked away and forgotten. While my father was adamantly not religious, my religious upbringing and biblical instruction came from my mother.…

I am currently a sophomore at Marquette University double majoring in psychology and criminology & law studies. These two fields of study are both something I have always had a strong interest for. I started my freshmen year of college at Marian University double majoring in psychology and forensic science with a minor in chemistry, but I decided that criminology was more in my interest than was forensic science, which is why I ended up here at Marquette and I could not be happier with my decision to transfer. From a young age I was always fascinated by how the human mind works, just in general and in a criminal sense, which is what both my majors have a big focus on. When I tell people I want to work in a prison directly with inmates, I almost always get the same reaction, “that’s different” or just “wow”.…
