The Role Of Lying In Relationships

Improved Essays
First of all, lying is ok in certain situations when maintaining a relationships. Granted it is known that it's sometimes ok to lie, yet one can say it's ok. For example, Cohen states “one key is credibility; once a person finds out you lied you loose currency in their eyes” (article 1 paragraph 12). Basically, lying here means not telling someone the full truth to someone to maintain a relationship is wrong. This is important because one can loose the person's trust but not only that one can also lose that relationship. For instance Cohen explains, “your fictional spouse about to accept a Nobel Prize, asks if they look fat.if you're one the way to the award ceremony you say, “you look fabulous” (Article 1 paragraph 11) one can see this is lying to not turn back and have to waste time. From this, one can infer that they just don't want to be completely honest on what …show more content…
Granted my opponents such as Kant believe that lying is never acceptable even in a life or death situation (article 2 paragraph 2), yet can be helpful in a life or death situation. In the justification chart it states, “jason lies to protect his dad from having a heart attack by lying and not saying his mother has cancer (justification chart #5). This means that jason only lied for the sake of his dad not having a heart attack so he only lied to save his dad. For instance, if jason would of lied, his dad would of had a heart attack and died so he only lied to protect his father. In addition blanton states, “we shouldn't manipulate the truth except for rare times- if you're hiding anne frank in your attic because her life is in danger.” (article 3 line 11). This means that one should lie when it's necessary like in a life or death situation because it's protecting others. From this one can infer that its ok to lie when it's a life or death situation. In conclusion lying i sometimes ok but it should only be used in necessary

In the essay "The Ways we Lie" by Stephanie Ericsson, It has been clearly described in many ways how a lie can be implied. Telling a lie can make life easier for some or even sometimes cause chaos. How would life be any different if there wasent anything called lying? Would people be alot happier or more on the offensive side. People get upset when a lie is being told to them but if theyre the ones lien, it's perfectly ok to do so.…

After reading the article "Is Lying for the Greater Good Ethical" By Thomas G. Plante, it is evident that sometimes lying can be for the greater good because it can prevent other people getting their feelings hurt and being hurt physically . First the author states that, "Sometimes lying could be the more appropriate ethnical response to a ethnical conflict." "For example, if a friend of yours were to ask you "How do I look in my new outfit." "One might be compelled to tweak the truth to not offend or hurt the feelings of someone who matters to you". This means that a tiny white lie like this really isn't going to matter in any way shape or form.…

I argue that lying is permissible in situations where lying is used for the greater good of others, which is supported by John Stewart Mill’s conception of Utilitarianism. According to Kant in the “Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals” it is not permissible to lie because he defines morality as not harming others, which lying does according to his “Metaphysics of Ethics.” Conversely, Utilitarianism is the theory that right actions maximize happiness, which could mean this happiness is acquired at another’s expense. At the core of this theory is the Greatest Happiness Principle. This principle states that one should act such that one’s actions produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number.…

If you ask most people do you think lying is acceptable, majority of them will not hesitate and tell you yes, and then give you multiple reasons on why lying is a bad thing. But if you actually sit down and think, everyone lies several times a day sometimes without even knowing it because the lie was so small and meaningless. But in other occasions people lie to protect things they care for and about they are also willing to accept the consequences behind their lies and actions. Some may even feel that lying at that point of time it was acceptable due to the situation they are put in. In the short story “Someone Ought to Tell Her…

Do you have explanations to backup your lies?Lying is could sometimes be acceptable when you are protecting others. Lying is sometimes acceptable. According to Blanton lying is okay when he said,”f you are hiding Anne Frank in your attic because her life is in danger,” in article 3 paragraph 11 If Anne Frank was in danger,if someone was looking for her to kill her,in that case you have to lie that she’s not in your attic. Another reason would be if you tell your dad that your mom is fine, when she is not,you protect him. For example,if your mom tells you she had been diagnosed with cancer, but she said not to tell your dad because he has heart problems and might get an attack, you would not want to tell you dad…

Is it ok to lie in any situation, or is it just wrong to lie at all ? In four articles that I read, it states a couple of things, for example, they talk about lying and if it's bad, is lying sometimes good, and is lying good. I believe lying is only good sometimes and it should only be used in white lies. I think a good time to lie is when you protect someone. One scenario of this is the story of Ann Frank.this is a good example because they were protecting Ann and her family by saying that there was nothing upstairs.…

The person I chose to interview for the second assignment was my mother, Casey Pike. I chose to interview my mother because I have witnessed her deceive my father and sometimes have been involved in the lie. Growing up both my parents worked and my family was fortunate enough to not have to worry about financial problems. My senior year of high school my father suddenly lost his job and it affected his way of thinking about money. Since then, he has gotten a new job, but with the fluctuating oil and gas business he has become extremely tight with money despite the fact that we now have the money to spend it more freely.…

    1. According to Ericsson, we all lie because we want to avoid confrontation, spare people’s feelings, and to get out of particular situations. To avoid confrontations, sometimes it is necessary to lie, for example, if you were talking about someone behind their back and they hear about it, you are going to deny that you ever talked bad about that person to avoid getting into an alteration. If someone is wearing an ugly outfit that they are real proud of, you are most likely going to lie to them by telling that someone that you love their outfit just to avoid hurting their feelings.…

the recent discussions of the intentions of lies, an issue has arisen about the selfishness of lies. On one hand, some argue that lies which are created with the feelings of others in mind are never selfish. On the other hand, others argue that all lies are based on selfish needs. They claim that every lie, no matter how small, is created from the selfish nature of people that want to better themselves. In short, the issue is whether lies can ever assist others.…

Most people will say that lying is never the answer, but they don’t always tell why. Lying often ends unethically, not only the can the lier be punished or feel guilty in the process, but it often goes further than anticipated. When looking back there seems to be more consequences on the result of the pretense than what the reward would have been if everything worked out and there was no lying. The Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthy Trials, and the McMartin Trials all proved that it is important to always be honest, regardless of the sacrifice.…

Should we lie because most Americans think it's always okay to lie all the time others think it's never okay to lie. Americans are very conflicted on whether we should or shouldn’t lie. I my opinion lying is only acceptable under certain circumstances, such as sparing others feelings. Some may feel that lying is never acceptable because it is morally wrong, however, I believe lying is acceptable when it can be used to protect and care for others. Randy cohen gave an example when he said “ if your wife is going out and she asks if she looks bad you say no it would be rude not to, because if you are already out of the house she will feel self conscious.…

In an interview with Robin Roberts, Robert Feldman, someone who has researched the subject of lies and deception for twenty plus years, said “We do it because it’s easy and because we get away with it and because it helps us in life” (Firestone). The human mind often assists in lying by helping the liar believe that by not telling the truth they are protecting someone else or themselves (Firestone). People are able to put their minds at ease when lying by convincing themselves that it is not that bad and that they are not doing anything wrong (Anonymous). It is not uncommon for people to only share information that they deem “safe” to tell and not tell everything; that is still a lie. It is a lie of omission, which at times is the worst kind of lie (Firestone).…

But if you lie to hold a relationship, you shouldn’t be in that relationship, you’re just hurting your mom, dad, brother, sister, cousin, whoever it is you’re hurting them as well as yourself. If you lose how close you are to a person because you told the truth, then they don’t accept the real you, that or it was your fault you messed up. They can’t handle the truth, that’s what I took from Blanton’s interview. In conclusion, lying is bad and can ruin a relationship. People rely on others for help which starts from trust.…
