Lysander defends himself by saying that he is just as wealthy as Demetrius. He also points out that Demetrius is an inconstant lover, before he was going for Hermia, he wooed other girls and even won the heart of Helena. This shows that Demetrius’s inconstancy can be hurtful, because maybe he will court another girl if he isn’t interested in Hermia anymore. On the other hand, Lysander says that he will love no other girl other than Hermia. In the book, it states “I am, my lord, as well as derived as he, as well possessed. Puck drops the love potion in Lysander’s eyes and tells him that when he wakes up, he will love Hermia again. In the text, it states “When thou wak’st, Thou talk’st true delight in the sight of thy former lady’s eye. And the country proverb known, that every man should take his own, in your waking shall be shown. Jack shall have Jill; naught shall go ill” (117.3.2). When they awake, Demetrius somehow falls in love with Helena again, and he isn’t under any kind of spell. So when they finally figures out who loves who, Theseus decides that the four lovers will marry at his wedding. In conclusion, A Midsummer’s Night Dream is a play with comedic surprises, while displaying one of Shakespeare’s most known themes, which is love. In the end, we get to see that Lysander and Hermia are truly meant for each other. They really are soul mates whose love will always remain for only each other. This play only shows that love cannot be controlled or forced, even if people are put under a love
