The Role Of Laila In A Thousand Splendid Suns

Decent Essays
Laila, in A Thousand Splendid Suns, has the sentiment that, “People...shouldn't be allowed to have new children if they'd already given away all their love to their old ones.” This idea made in her childhood and carried with her through motherhood had always been in her mind. Upon realizing that she is going to have Rasheed's child, as opposed to the child she already had with Tariq, Laila”...had to wonder, ...if indeed she could ever love Rasheed's child as she had Tariq's.”(Hosseini 170) In a moment of contemplating putting the sharp metal spoke in her belly, she decides not too. This can directly be traced in the text where she can't kill the innocent. A reminder to embrace this newborn and continue her mental fight with Rasheed.
